View Full Version : In-house Caliibration Of Gloss Meter gpainter 28th June 2002, 03:06 PM We are faced with some budget cut and are wanting to calibrate our gloss meters on our own. We have some calls out but the people here are like Ford and have better ideas. Anyone have any suggestions? Ken K 2nd July 2002, 01:17 AM We calibrate our gloss meter in-house. The standard is sent out every two years to an outside vendor for re-certification. Don't you use a standard now to verify your glossmeter? gpainter 8th July 2002, 11:08 AM Our gloss meter is sent out for calibration. We are looking for the standard, so we can do our own. Ken K. can you expand on where you purchased the standard and any Work Instructions for the calibration? Ken K 15th July 2002, 12:41 PM We use specular gloss standard's calibrated to geometries of 20 - 60 - 85 degrees. We have a gloss black standard for high gloss readings and a matte white used for low gloss readings. These come from BYK Gardner and are available from Thomas Scientific and Fisher Scientific. Cole-Parmer also carries standards. They are somewhat expensive and need to be replaced if scratched. Use care when handling. This is a little tidbit I picked up off the net. Might be usefull. gpainter 15th July 2002, 01:32 PM Thanks for the info, since we are a small company (less than 500). We will more than likely continue to send out for calibration. If anyone has more info., please reply. Knowledge is power. Thanks to all and to all good calibrations. Marc 13th December 2005, 09:45 PM What's the scoop? What did you end up doing? How did it all work out? gpainter 14th December 2005, 08:27 AM I have since left the company. it was decided to cut the calibration to five years and I would probably say that is now not calibrate at all. djlance 22nd October 2008, 07:33 AM We use specular gloss standard's calibrated to geometries of 20 - 60 - 85 degrees. The gloss meter from BYK is more expensive than most other meters but it is considered the best one available. Have you tried contacting BYK about how to calibrate it? |
