Help...can anyone tell me what's in the new standard for calibrations? Considering purchasing a copy, but not if it's not worth it. If I could get a look at it or find out the comparison between the Z540, section II and the new one, I could decide if I need it or not.

Welcome to the cove.

The actual standard for calibration is 17025 and is more valuable than both of the 10012 standards (IMO).

Unfortunately I don't have a copy of either 17025 or Z540 with me right now to look at them (they're at home now), and it's been awhile since I've read them, so I can't give a real good comparison off the top of my head.

When you say section II, I'm assuming that you are referring to the uncertainty section. Section II goes into a lot more detail about uncertainty than 17025 does. Basically 17025 says that calibration labs shall have have procedures for estimating measurement uncertainty, but leaves it up to the lab to determine how to go about it. If I remember right I believe one of the notes refers to the 'Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement' (which I don't have with me now either).

ISO 17025 is the standard which regulates calibration laboratories. The document which deals with uncertainty estimation is the GUM Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement. 10012 is really redundant in the light of these two

Just need whatever it takes to cover what we calibrate in-house for the new Iso9001/2000 standard.............We currently are covered to the old standard. Is that good enough???? Or is there something new I should know????:bonk:

If your current calibration program satisfies the 1994 version of 9001 than you're fine. There is nothing different for calibration in the new standard. If you are calibrating in house you just need to make sure that you are meeting the specified requirements in 9001:2000. There's not really any reason to worry about 17025, Z540, or 10012 (other than for your own information). I know calibration can be somewhat confusing and I hope this helps. I do have copies of all the standards at home that I can review if you want any specific information.
