View Full Version : New Forums Software
Marc 20th June 2003, 11:59 PM In part I'm testing the Poll function. To do it, here's a poll...
If you like the new software, pls take a minute and tell us why by posting in this thread!
Thanks!
energy 22nd June 2003, 10:41 AM As a fairly long time user, the meat and potatoes are still here with some other features that should make it easier for the newbees to find their stuff. The "similar" thread feature should cut down on the amount of repeat questions. I'm still playing with the new condiments and will let y'all know in the "testing new software thread. :smokin:

Where is the 'Similar' thread feature? I could never get the hang of that on the old board and it would have been handy.
The regular stuff looks like it is still in place. It is all pretty new and I'll need time to decipher it.
What is the 'insert PHP' button for in the reply page ? (I originally put in the 'insert PHP' symbols but they would not appear in the message nor did the text that followed)
Was there supposed to be a Poll? (Edited bit: when I first opened this the Poll was not there. I have just submitted the reply and when I went back there was the Poll sitting at the top)
Greg B :)
Greg B 22nd June 2003, 09:32 PM I have just found the similar threads feature and you are right energy, it should save time as long as people see it at the bottom of the page before asking the same questions over and over again.
PS. I'm just trialling the Quick reply feature
Claes Gefvenberg 23rd June 2003, 05:11 AM Once we get settled down with this new software and all its gizmos, I think it will work wonders for the Cove. Seen from the user end it should be pretty easy to come to grips with.

energy 23rd June 2003, 08:35 AM Greg,
Marc posted the info in the thread called "Similar Thread" or something like that. It's neat. Also, the Users Control Panel has been made real user friendly. Great Job, Marc!!

You folks won't use the php button - it's mainly for coders. It's like quoting. If you were to post php code within a message, for it to show you have to encase it in something.
Al Dyer 23rd June 2003, 01:27 PM Am I missing it or is "posts since your last visit" gone?
No biggie, I go to the "last 24 hours" button.

Al,
Top right hand corner. There are 4 (I think) temporary buttons. The second from the left (I think) is new posts since your last visit.

Bill Ryan 23rd June 2003, 02:08 PM So far I like it!!!!!! Hope I don't hit the "wrong" button too often.

Mike S. 23rd June 2003, 02:19 PM I thought the "old" forums software was better than any other forum I have been to (4 or 5 others), so I was more than satisfied with it as it was. So far, this new version seems even better yet.

Correct. They are temporary images. I think we all pushed pretty hard to get these folks to release something as we could see it running their forums. So - this is it for now. I expect another beta release in two weeks to a month.
This is beta software. There are a number of things to clean up yet. The buttons are functional but need images. It will be a few weeks before I get things in order.
Mouse over most thinngs and there's an explaination.

That feature appears everywhere. Even mousing on a thread, you get a preview of the contents. Just about every icon has a label. Pretty fancy! :) :smokin:
howste 25th June 2003, 03:49 PM I like some of the new features. Most of them I have seen at other forums before, so it shouldn't take too much getting used to. My favorites are
• "mouse over" on topics so I don't have to open a thread to see what it's about
• "quick reply" box
• "similar threads"
I haven't tried the linear/hybrid/threaded buttons yet to see what they do...
Mary Hartman 27th June 2003, 11:50 AM This is what I was starting to post the other night when the forums blew up.
To remind, this is beta software and there will be a number of cosmetic and other features brought in over the next couple of months. There will be buttons.
But there's so much more.
Threaded views: Some of you may remember this used to be an old complaint. I like linear but got a lot of 'complaints' from people who like threaded views.
You can get an immediate e-mail when someone responds to a thread, but now you have other choices like a daily or weekly 'digest'.
The program was rewritten for 'language packs'. All the buttons and all the software text you see (not the posts you folks make - just the labels and such) will be choosable by the user. I know German and French language packs are in the works and I am sure a Spanish pack will come soon as well.
On my end, I can't begin to tell you all the new features. But the bottom line is over the next few months a number of things will be changing - all for the better.
Now - if I can keep the darn server up and running...
