View Full Version : GIF Picture Thumbnails
Mary Hartman 27th June 2003, 11:58 AM I turned on 'thumbnail views' and found that a number of .gif files did not render in the post they're in. If you find a picture in a thread which shows up as a 'placeholder' box instead of a picture, please use the Report This Thread link on that post so that I can fix it.
Please also use this thread to discuss or to let me know of any you find.
Bob_M 27th June 2003, 01:08 PM Testing .gif attachment with animated gif. 49.3k in size.
Does not appear to work with animated .gifs in thumbnail view...
Just a black box.
Lets try somethinge else... Appears to work with a standard .jpg.
Marc 27th June 2003, 01:26 PM I've only noticed it with gif files, but I don't know why yet. I checked the permissions and mime types for gifs and rebuilt the thumbnail database, so I'm at a loss.
Not a big deal, right now, because you can click the image box and the image comes up in a new window (or does for me).
I am looking into what the cause may be.

Howard Atkins 2nd July 2003, 12:40 AM I cannot see a .gif
Howard Atkins 2nd July 2003, 01:13 AM now I see it.
Why was there a delay
Marc 2nd July 2003, 02:09 AM Well, right now there are a lot of things happening. The folks from vB came to troubleshoot (My many thanks to Freddie) and when I saw he was gone (or appeared to be) I shut down the forums (there was no one 'online' that I could see but me) I 'upgraded' to beta v4.
If Freddie (from vB) changes something, I assume he'll let me know. Right now I'm as blind as you as to exactly what is happening.
Whatever Freddie did, it appears he fixed the problem.
I have to admit I REALLY like this feature of this version of the software!

Not being funny here. Don't gif files usually animate? :o :smokin:

Most currently used .gifs are animated now a days.
Gifs pre-date .jpg but are less compress and can use less colors.
howste 2nd July 2003, 07:19 PM OK, now I've gotta try too...

Works great, howste. Even the thumbnail is animated. Cool!!!
OOPS. Only the thumbnail is animated. can't open the actual file. Sorry.

Nope.... Same result here, but I think I know why... Somehow it isn't a thumbnail at all. I wonder why that happened? Anyway, there is no link attached to it, and it is in fact smaller in both pixel and file size than our thumbnails. Could it be that the software doesn't create a thumbnail for very small (less than thumbnail sized) pictures?
As for the pictures I tested, I don't have a clue... Two of them are identical apart from the fact that one is a jpeg and the other one a gif. I cannot see my own gif thumbnails, but they are still clickable.. (Groan)
Wait a minute... I seem to recall that there are a few slightly different gif formats. Could that be it?

Marc 3rd July 2003, 02:52 PM OK - you can hold back for a while. The gif thumbnail issue will not be fixed until the next Beta release. The guy from vB came and fixed it but I upgraded to Beta 4 from Beta 3 and overwrote the file before he told me not to....
Right now if you upload something, save it as a jpg or pnt file and upload that.

I believe the issue with the .gif thumbnails was fixed in this last release (Beta 5). Thumbnails are an enabled conversion function independent of the forum software. Before it was trying to convert a .gif file to a reduced size .gif. Now it converts them (as it has been doing for .jpg files) to reduced size .pnt files.
I hadn't seen any issues on .bmp uploads but I don't use them - they're Windoz files - and haven't hear anyone complain until a minute ago in a message energy posted and then deleted. I guess he got them to work.
The .gif format shouldn't matter. I think in the animated .gif files it takes the first frame and shrinks that.

Nuttin gets by you. Exactly right! I call them brain f*rts" Oops. No off color words! It was just post specific. Actually, I was trying to attach a pic, but it was showing as an attachment. Like the ole days. ;)
Marc 25th August 2003, 06:08 PM Bitmaps may show up that way - like 'standard' attachments.

You can see them now, yes?
Marc 23rd September 2003, 10:36 PM This issue should be dead. All thumbnails are being rendered as .pnt files now.
