Randy 16th August 2006, 09:35 AM That'd be great except that I have a real job and the course I'm doing doesn't end until 7PM.

Hershal 19th August 2006, 12:23 PM I want to thank Claes for many hours of enjoyable conversation.....
I was in Eskilstuna last night and we spoke until the wee hours of the morning.....Claes is exceptionally knowledgeable and it come through on the Cove, but even more so in person!
Regards,

Claes Gefvenberg 19th August 2006, 01:59 PM I want to thank Claes for many hours of enjoyable conversation.....Thank you. :agree: I had a great time.:D
I was in Eskilstuna last night and we spoke until the wee hours of the morning..... Claes is exceptionally knowledgeable and it come through on the Cove, but even more so in person!Well, you proved to be no less knowledgeable yourself, you know.
It soon became obvious that we had some common interests: Apart fom a lot of other things, we talked for hours on end about history: Ancient, current you name it. Great!
As for the wee hours, I think we used them well (I got home just after 4am :notme:).
/Claes
Laura M 21st August 2006, 12:45 AM Sounds like fun! And I see in the background of first pic articles about the Red Sox? What's up with that in Eskilstuna? I gotta admit, I 'googled' Eskilstuna just to find out where it was.
Claes Gefvenberg 21st August 2006, 04:10 AM Sounds like fun! And I see in the background of first pic articles about the Red Sox? What's up with that in Eskilstuna? It was fun :agree1: . As for the Red Sox stuff, I suppose some basball freak decorator was hired when they fixed the place up. The entire wall was plastered with baseball lore. :D

Randy 23rd August 2006, 11:58 PM Rox and I are planning on dinner in Toronto Aug 30th, if anyone else is around let me know.
I'm operating out of the Toronto Wyndham near the airport and will actually be in the area all week delivering an 18001 Lead Auditor course at the BSI Canada headquarters.
Rox mentioned that I'll be the 1st Cover that she's had an opportunity to meet, and afterwards she'll probably never want to meet another:lol:
RCBeyette 25th August 2006, 07:51 AM Rox mentioned that I'll be the 1st Cover that she's had an opportunity to meet, and afterwards she'll probably never want to meet another:lol:
Well, after meeting the best...why meet the rest? :notme: ;)
RCBeyette 31st August 2006, 09:13 AM Well, folks, I met Randy...and have lived to tell the tale! For the record, I feel no need to start any therapy, although I'm not sure if Randy will be able to say the same. :notme:
The scariest part of the evening was when we determined that someone Randy is working with up here happens to be a former auditor for my plant. What are the odds?!?! :mg:
Psst...if Vic remembers me and tells you any stories, they're all lies! Lies, I tell you! Unless of course it's about me being a bit of a harda$$...in which case, it's the truth.
I do believe that by the end of the evening, Randy has determined that I'm a very dull person, with no fun hobbies and nothing interesting to say. :) Of course that could also be because he couldn't hear me over the airplanes flying overhead.
Seriously, though, had a blast with Randy. He gave me all the gossip on the over Covers he's met and I'm currently contemplating the fee I should charge him to not spread his stories..... ;)
Sidney Vianna 31st August 2006, 09:33 AM Well, folks, I met Randy... What were you thinking!!?!?!?:mg: Never heard of preventive action?http://www.ugoplayer.com/forum/images/smilies/rofl1.gifHe gave me all the gossip on the over Covers he's met and I'm currently contemplating the fee I should charge him to not spread his stories..... ;)So, tell us. Doesn't he look like the guy on the cover page of my book (http://elsmar.com/Forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=5216&d=1149560855)? Just a little bit rounder?:notme:
Coury Ferguson 31st August 2006, 09:39 AM I think we need to start a new poll on this subject, since it has changed since the original poll.
I believe that people who selected "still looking" have met covers. I selected "still looking" but that has now changed, after meeting with Wes and Craig H.
Just a suggestion.
RCBeyette 31st August 2006, 09:57 AM What were you thinking!!?!?!?:mg: Never heard of preventive action? So, tell us. Doesn't he look like the guy on the cover page of my book? Just a little bit rounder?:notme:
I was in the mood to play with fire. ;)
And thankfully, Randy left the old Ozark hat at home.
Randy 31st August 2006, 10:57 PM I am so sorry that I have taken this long to respond to the young lady's post above.
Yes, I did have dinner with Rox in Toronto, and No, she did not require an armed guard (even though 30 years ago she might have and that's the truth;) )
Yes, we had a very good conversation ranging from serious work and cultural issues to auditors passing gas at closing meetings.:lmao:
No she doesn't look like here avatar (even though she does have hair on her head too), and Yes, she appeared to have all the girl parts in the correct places (a guess only of course)
Yes, it was a bit noisy from the airplanes (we were nearly under the flight path at Toronto airport) and No, I did not need a hearing aid to carry on our chat.
Bottom line, we had a pretty good evening and it ended too early. I'm the 1st person from here in the Cove that Rox has had an opportunity to meet and I'm sure she was a bit apprehensive at 1st, but that went way. Anytime any of you guys can get up here to Toronto please do not pass up the chance to meet with my good and now personal friend Roxane Beyette.
I explained to Rox that I have been very fortunate and never disappointed with the folks I've had an opportunity to meet in person from the Cove. I told her that I owe Lucinda (remember her?) my gratitude because she is responsible for helping me locate the home I now have. I talked about spending a couple of real good evening with that old coot Wes and meeting Howard Akins in the process (Howard I hope your son is well, Judi and I have kept him and his fellow soldiers in our prayers). I talked about dining with Ann Morgan, Steve Howste, seeing old Marc himself stroll into one of my classes for a week, conversing with db (Dave Bradley) and getting to buddy up with my lil sis Cari (no relation to the rock star) and the many others that pop in and out here.
Roxane! Thanks:bighug:

HershalWant to come to an ASQ Chicago Section meeting on the 11th? ASQ Executive Director Borawski will be there!60th Anniversary of ASQ!
The pre-dinner portion of the evening will focus on three short speeches. Mr. Lieberman will speak of our history; Mr. Gupta will summarize the current state-of-the-art, and Mr. Borawski will conjecture where we are heading.
The post-dinner presentation will feature a summary of the themes presented earlier and target where we need to improve ourselves to meet the future . . . as leaders instead of followers. Afterwards, all three panelists will participate in an extended Q&A session with the audience.
Where do you think we are heading as a profession? What significant changes in the profession that you have experienced to date? What changes do you anticipate in the future? Email me your ideas at vcprogram@asqchicago.org prior to the meeting.

ralphsulser 1st November 2006, 11:11 AM Last evening I met with fellow “Cover” Valerie Stroh in North Carolina for dinner. She was auditing a plant her company has there. She is very interesting to talk with, and share quality systems and our historic experiences. We exchanged our comments about mutual automotive quality mandates, and how we were affected.
She is a fine lady very knowledgeable, nice, and a good sense of humor. I really enjoyed spending some time with her.
If you ever get a chance to meet with her, you will have a good time.

Wow, I hope that you didn't figure that out by "bumping" into one? yes, it is dear season, so they tend to get flushed out onto the roads a little more right now. Unfortunately, if it isn't a deer running out in front of you, it'll be a hunting dog.

Yes, and it is also the time of the deer year called the rut. Meaning the guys are out chasing the girls, all day and all night. Some bucks will become so depleated/exhausted that they will not live to see the spring. Nothing like a little single-minded abandon.
;)

No, no - during dinner we were talking about the number of deer I see on the road (in a prone position) in Indiana this time of the year and the "hits" were really high on this one stretch of road that was quite similar to the 2-lane I traveled to get to dinner. Ralph said he hadn't seen many yet and I should be OK - :nope:
I found (3) thankfully on their side of the road - can't imagine the hassle there would have been with the car rental company. It could have been worse - the next morning, Ralph said his boss hit one on the way to work.
RCBeyette 6th November 2006, 08:32 AM Since my meeting with Randy was highly successful (i.e., I didn't require therapy afterwards), I decided to venture out again and meet another Cover. On Saturday, EtobiLad and I met up in Toronto...and brought our dogs. After a bit of growling, swatting and the usual sniffing, the canines decided that we had settled down enough to go for a walk.
We walked around Ashbridges Bay Park, which is down on the lakefront, for about 2 hours. Had a great conversation ranging from work (naturally) to homelife to how often we yell at our canine companions.
We'll probably meet up again before the snows start to fly. Location is TBD. For anyone in the Toronto area - with or without dogs - are you interested in meeting up and joining us?
Randy 6th November 2006, 07:18 PM I'll be arriving in Ontario, California on Nov 8th and will be leaving on the 11th. I'll be with family, but might have some time on the 9th to meet up with someone local. We have a "granddaughter" getting married on the 10th so time is going to get compressed fast.
Hershal 7th November 2006, 12:08 AM Hey Randy,
You will be just "down the hill" from me (as we in the High Desert call the LA basin area).....I should be in town Thursday-Friday and I think even Saturday.....perhaps get together for a few minutes.....?
Let me know.
Hershal
Randy 7th November 2006, 11:31 AM Thursday may actually be the only time. The wife will probably be doing some pre-wedding whatever. I'll be with my grandson Zachary and we will both be looking for some way to occupy our time during the afternoon, probably Ontario Mills.
Hershal 12th November 2006, 10:06 PM Randy,

If anyone wants to meet Howard, and me for that matter, we can set up a dinner at a local restaurant, or a lunch, for Friday 1 December. Or whatever. I have a small house and it's in disarry as I'm in the beginnings of what is essentially a rehab of the house - walls to be paneled, floors, windows, doors to be replaced, and much more. Next spring I'm having a contractor enlarge the house as well. So, I really don't have much of a place to invite a group of people to right now.
Howard, keep me posted on your plans.
What I would really like is to have a 'Get Together' in Amsterdam next summer...
RCBeyette 21st November 2006, 08:15 AM What I would really like is to have a 'Get Together' in Amsterdam next summer...
Sounds ideal! According to my Human Resources department, I am entitled to this concept known as 'vacation time'. Apparently I have 3 days to use up before December 31, not including the week we get off during the holidays, plus 7.5 days to use before the end of March 2007, and then another 21 days to use up between March and December 2007.
Can anyone tell me what a vacation is? ;) Or is that a whole separate thread?
howste 22nd November 2006, 04:37 PM LOL, I've heard of this "vacation" concept. I wish that it would actually occur now and then. I do get the rest of this week off though.
Here's what's coming up in my travel schedule for the next few weeks:
Next week 28th through the 30th in Portland
December 5-6 in Albuquerque
December 13-15 in Seattle area
Ron Rompen 23rd November 2006, 01:51 PM Anyone have any recommendations for a good place to eat in Syracuse NY? Seems I will be spending a fair bit of my time there, so I might as well learn to enjoy it.
I already know about The Dinosaur, and The Blue Tusk, and The Glass Onion. Usually staying up in the Carrier Circle area, so anything close to there would be good.
Thanks guys/gals

Let us know and maybe CraigH and I can meet with you. I am approx. 20-25 miles North of Atlanta. CraigH would have a trip and maybe this time we can get Craig Cochran to make it, since he was unable to meet with Wes, Craig and I last time. Maybe Gidget Stough (AKA: GStough) might also be able to travel east and meet.
Let one of us know. I would like to meet you.

Break down, Randy, and rent a car! You need to see something more of the towns you visit instead of the airport waiting room, the hotel meeting room, your room the hotel bar, and the inside of the van or cab that hauls you between airport and hotel! Lots of cool stuff in and around Atlanta. Stay an extra day and visit the new Aquarium!

I am going to AL to visit family for Christmas, flying using miles, staying in the hotel on points.....no sweat.....
I usually fly American unless going up/down the coast, then usually Alaska/Horizon.....stay in HI Express or Hampton Inn.....usually rent from Avis or Alamo.....
One more indication of my travels.....I can almost tell you by concourse what eating places are at DFW (Dallas), ORD (Chicago), PDX (Portland), SEA (Seattle).....have been in all four Admirals Clubs at DFW, and both at ORD.....and many others also....
Thursday I will see my office for the first time in about 7 weeks.....

Randy 19th December 2006, 10:50 PM Heck Hershal, by September I'd requalified as Executive Platinum and in Nov I passed the 100K mark on American (all lower 48 miles too).
In Sep I hit Executive VIP with National Car and requaled Gold with Hilton, Nov Platinum with Priority Clubs, and something else I can't remember.
Of course I have the onesies and twosies with other hotel groups.

Wes Bucey 20th December 2006, 01:23 AM I recall having a deal in Los Angeles back in the late 70's or early 80's that required me to make weeky trips between Chicago and LA for 6 or 7 weeks. The third week I noticed a guy who had been on the other two flights from LA to Chicago (the red eye that arrived about 6 am.) I sidled up to him as we were lining up to board the plane and said something inane like, "I see you're making the weekly flight back to Chicago."
His reply gave me a cold chill, "No. Not weekly, daily!" He sat in his seat and was asleep before the plane began to taxi from the gate.
Randy 20th December 2006, 02:11 AM That's "serious" flying.:jawdrop:

My questions when I was initiated in 1964:
What is it that a man can do standing up, a women sitting down, and a dog on three legs?
What is it that a cow has four of and a woman has only two of?
What is a four-letter word ending in "K" that means the same as intercourse?
What is it on a man that is round, hard and sticks so far out of his pajamas you can hang a hat on it?
What goes in hard and dry and comes out soft and sticky?
My answers back then:
shake hands

Marc 23rd January 2007, 02:04 AM There was a different home page about 5 to 10 years ago, and there was an 'Official' organization, or at least one I sent $ to (years ago) which (supposedly) went to charity. The address and all that was on the card, but I have no idea what ever happened to the card I got from them.
Those are the same questions, remembering back 20+ years, that I was asked. I think I was at the New Stanley Hotel in Nairobi when I was 'inducted' by one Howard Hinde who was from Missouri. Remembering his family history (as he told it) his ancestors held land (which he described as a 'plantation') in what is now Covington, KY back in the 1700's. I have some pictures of him, I think in Mombassa, somewhere in my picture collection.
I have remembered the Turtle 'Club', which is in part why, when this thread started, I put "Are you a Turtle?" in the thread title.
Coury Ferguson 23rd January 2007, 07:14 AM HEY COURY! and N. Georgia folks
I'm in Atlanta all next week. I'm staying at the 12 Hotel and will be arriving Sunday Jan 21 in the late afternoon.
Randy,
I know you will be leaving on Friday or is your flight out scheduled for Saturday?
If you flight is scheduled for Saturday, maybe we can get together Friday night, if not maybe Thursday evening. I know that GStough is interested, and CraigH might be able to make it later this week.
Randy 23rd January 2007, 07:49 AM I fly out Friday at 3PM. It's not too bad here at Atlantic Station, but don't expect to eat for $1.95.
Coury Ferguson 23rd January 2007, 07:51 AM I fly out Friday at 3PM. It's not too bad here at Atlantic Station, but don't expect to eat for $1.95.
We will see if CraigH and GStough are able to make it Thursday.
Coury Ferguson 23rd January 2007, 08:26 AM We will see if CraigH and GStough are able to make it Thursday.
Randy,
Maybe lunch would be better on Friday (approx. 11:00 AM-1:00 PM) at the airport?
When is your class scheduled to end on Friday, since your flight is at 3:00 PM?
Craig H. 23rd January 2007, 09:17 AM We will see if CraigH and GStough are able to make it Thursday.
I was sure going to try to get to ATL this week, but events have worked against me. This latest will 86 my plans for good.
Transmission kicked the bucket Saturday. No real warning, it worked one second, and the next thing I know I'm rolling down the driveway backwards. Fortunately, with the engine running, the power steering still worked, so I didn't end up in the lake. In hindsight, though, that might have been a good idea. Anyway, this is gonna be expensive.
I am sorry I am going to miss y'all.
EtobiLad 24th January 2007, 09:15 AM I'll be in Orlando, FL Feb 3rd to the 4th.
Would be neat to meet a fellow Cover if you live in the area.
PM me. I'll be staying at a hotel along Mccoy rd. near the Intl. Airport..
:bigwave:
Randy 27th January 2007, 03:15 PM Got to meet and have lunch yesterday (26 Jan) with Coury in Atlanta. We really had too little time to talk while I waited to fly out, but what we had was good, as was lunch.
Oh yeah Coury, my flight got delayed about an hour but I didn't find that out until I got to the gate. I really hated to rush away.
The crazy schedule I had (730AM-7PM) just didn't leave time to get to see CCochran or some others. I really am sorry (thanks for the invite Craig). As the Terminator said "I'll be back".

I enjoyed meeting you Randy. I wish there could have been more time. Let me know the next time you are in town and we can schedule more time.
Really folks Randy, is a nice guy.
Now I invite RC when you are around auditing your company in the states to meet.
Now, lets see how much the poll has changed for me: Originally I voted haven't met, but would like to meet. As of this date I have met, CraigH, Wes Bucey, Randy (Sidney before I knew he was in the Cove).
I put this recommendation before this forum:
We start a new poll, because I know there were changes to my selection and I believe there have been other Covers that may have changed results.

I have a possible trip to Jackson, TN in February and a couple of days in Atlanta in late Feb/early March (prelude to a two-week trip to Brazil).
When I have confirmation (or denial), I'll send the word out.
GStough 29th January 2007, 09:28 AM I was sure going to try to get to ATL this week, but events have worked against me. This latest will 86 my plans for good.

Well, Craig, you weren't the only one with vehicle woes. I had to have my windshield replaced Friday, and didn't get it back until 5:00 (had hoped to have it back early enough to make the drive to ATL). I sure did want to meet y'all this time around. Oh well, I guess there will be more opportunities in the future, at least I sure hope so!
Colpart 29th January 2007, 09:55 AM It must be time for vehicle trouble - I had mine stolen from off the drive 2 weeks ago. The crooks came in the house, stole the keys and took the car. I caught them leaving and - like an idiot - ran after them. I managed to open the car door but they took off with me attached. Fortunately I was thrown clear and only sustained bruising and scrapes.
I know I shouldn't have tried to stop them but in the heat of the moment instinct takes over. At least they recovered the car a few days later and there seems little or no damage. The police think it had been stolen 'to order' and was awaiting the next stage when they found it. I hope to get it back later this week.
Marc 29th January 2007, 10:07 AM What kind of car did you have?
Came in the house to get the keys? Bummer...
Colpart 29th January 2007, 10:13 AM It's only a 3 month old Mazda 6. No great specialised car but seemingly desirable to someone who wanted it either to break for spares or to 'clone' and sell on.

About a month before Randy came to ATL I replaced the tires, costing about $450. Then I smelled antifreeze, but could not locate the leak. That was because it was between the engine block and the intake manifold. Another $300. The next week was time for fun with transaxles. $1200. I should get it back this afternoon.
Colpart, I wonder if those guys have any relatives in the U.S.? I'll leave the key next to the front door.:bonk:

Hey, Anniston is much closer to me than ATL....I could definitely make that one (as long as nothing catastrophic happens!)!! :biglaugh: Looking forward to that one....Birmingham is very doable, too, and I know a great place to eat with a good jazz band on Wednesday nights. ;)

Actually I have been riding around in my 1979 Toyota pickup. It also has new tires ($250). It usually sits and gets cranked once a week or so. 110,000 miles on original engine and tranny (4 speed). The bed is rusted, and the left fender has a parking garage dent. Runs like a top, but it is just not as comfortable to drive.

Only 110,000 miles? That's a new truck! My '82 that I gave away in 2000 had over 360,000 on the original engine, transmission, brakes, clutch, belts and hoses among other things (all while living in the High Mojave Desert)

Randy 31st January 2007, 12:44 AM Only 30 miles away.....I live in Victorville.....if you were USMC, then you were at Yermo?
Naw...my time in Barstow was after my Marine days and I was in the "real Corps" so Barstow wouldn't have been one of my assignments. I spent a bit of time at the "Stumps" (29 Palms) and other choice Marine Corps locals.
I am very familiar with Yermo and the activities there though. I worked at Irwin for 17 years and the Yermo support activities were tied to quite a bit of what I did for Lockheed, ITT and the Army.
As for Victorville, I remember Bear Valley Road when it was 2 lanes, no mall and no prison.
Hershal 31st January 2007, 09:52 PM Ahhhhh.....I live around the corner from the former George AFB.....Bear Valley is a bit South.....old downtown (Route 66) is a bit closer.....
Randy 1st February 2007, 05:54 PM OK Wes and you other Chicago types here's where I'll be Feb 11-16
Hilton Lisle/Naperville
3003 Corporate West Drive
Lisle, Illinois, United States 60532
RCBeyette 2nd February 2007, 08:43 AM Jackson, Tennessee on Feb 14-16.
I've grumbled that they're making the single girl travel on Valentine's Day to which my former boss (who is requesting the trip) stated : "Hey, single girl travelling on Feb 14...could be your best V-day yet!"
winchm 2nd February 2007, 01:26 PM I don't mind V Day, but Toronto International was hell on Dec. 21st - fortunately I bumped into a great bunch of people to pass the time with. A Sasquatch couple I met helped a Columbian fellow catch a connecting flight to Texas so he could make the once a week flight to be home for Christmas. I helped a Mexican Graduate on vacation repack and tag his luggage. While talking to the couple an lovely young Asian lady asked for directions to her terminal. About 5 minutes later when we were getting ready to board we noticed that the lady (Ming) had left her carry-on, pocketbook, cell phone and a gift by our gate - The couple watched my stuff and I ran down from Terminal B with Ming's stuff - she was running back and we met halfway. It was a kick talking to the Sasquatch couple as their Swedish dialect sounded just like the actors in "Fargo" - a movie they had never seen - they told me they are the Canadian neighbors of Fargo, ND. Well thare ya go - you betcha.

I am having transmission problems too. 2003 Chrysler Town & Country.Give a big jerk when downshifting into the lowest gear.
Been in the shop 5 times, fix only seems to last a month.
Last time they had it a month, and it lasted a month. Dealer Service manager says he is not sure how to correct it permantly. I told him a new/different trany may work.I bought it new and was fixed twice under warranty, to continuing to repair becasuse warranty corrections did not provide permanent correction.

Chrysler has problems with their "transmission sensor" (I had one replaced 4 times, that is why I prefer the GM Cars and got rid of the Chrysler). I still think it is a problem.

Hmmm. Now that you mention it, I have owned 4 Chrysler products over the years:
'72 Duster
'72 Valiant
'93 Dakota
'98 Intrepid.
The Dakota was the only one that did not experience massive tranny failure.
Can I therefore call Chrysler Drivetrain Engineers "shiftless"?

Yep, I had a Daytona and in 1973 paid a whole $1500 for it. It was a 440 that I had equipped with a Holley 4500 Dominator, a 3.23 rear end, and would top 160mph (clocked by the good old Arkansas State Police on I-40 outside of Lonoke, AR). I tore the whole front end off of it during the chase and couldn't get replacement parts at the time (remember, limited production). All of the flaps, vents and wing were for a purpose...SPEED and downforce.
And no, I wasn't compensated. They did replace my ammunition though.
And yes, I do know what they are worth today$$$$$$:( :(
