View Full Version : Bump into a 'Cover'? Where the Elite Meet to eat? Are you a Turtle?

I recently met with a client and we began discussing sources of information, I started to mention this site, and she responded; "You mean the Cove?". As it turns out, she is a regular (I shall not identify her -- to keep her reputation undamaged :biglaugh: ). That got me wondering how many times a Cover has bumped into another Cover. I know that some have been reported to be planned arrangements, but how many times has it happened?

Also, give some details.

I haven't bumped into anyone - but, one of my vendors was browsing and saw my name. He gave me a call and we have been helping each other out with a few things. Sort of a benchmarking relationship.

I'd love to bump into a cover some time. A lot of you are close to my area. Maybe someday. :bigwave:

I have not bumped into any yet. However, before I joined to Cove I was in a class with a Cove member.

I would be interested in talking to some of the members face to face.

Our old Quality Manager showed me the cove on several occasions while he was here and during the "training" period as he was leaving. He now happens to be the Quality Manager for one of our suppliers and is implementing an ISO 9000:2000 system where there was no certified system in place.

I might send a link to another one of our vendors who bought a "canned" package. I don't know how far along they are on their update, but this site might help them like it helped me!

We almost made it. Remember? There was a likely prospect that ISO GUY would have been one of our Auditors. But the deal fell through because our CEO decided it was too much money to spend around Christmas time, so he abolished the Quality Department and the Mgt Rep, dashing any plans for registration. (and he wanted to get rid of somebody anyway) :vfunny: :smokin:

Nope, haven't met anyone.

Although, :o , I admit that I thought WALLACE was a former External Auditor of mine until I figured out he was Ford. I was trying to watch what I said in case he figured out who I was and would hold it against me in a surveillance audit. Big sigh of relief when I discovered the truth! ;)

It would be nice if we could arrange a group meeting for folks in general geographical areas. For example, southern Ontario/upstate NY could pick the Falls as a meeting place.

I also realize that in this day and age, people question their safety when meeting people from online is suggested. I have met online "friends" before and was very thankful that I picked a highly public location for the meeting. Now I've evolved to pick public places and meet in groups of 3 or more - odd numbers tend to prevent pairing off.

I did vote "No - still searching" although that's not quite true. I may not have met anyone, but it's not an active task of mine either. And how do you accidently bump into one?...MARC???...is there some secret handshake you neglected to tell me about? :D

Every other year the Quality Expo comes to Novi Michigan. I attempted to get a bunch of us togther then, but I thought about it too late. But the thought is valid. If there is any trade show in your area, place it on the schedule. Someone in that area act as host and set up a meeting. Who knows, perhaps even the Mayor will show up. energy will have to check his gun at the door though!

2 members (besides me) right here in my own office + I have introduced a few to the Cove.

Met David Swap (swappyd) and Jim Wade (the real one... I think:vfunny:...he was a member then) last year in England. Had plans of calling on a few others, but couldn't quite make it. Met Jim again when he was here. I also know a few regular visitors (who haven't registered yet) and when introduced first time, it's nice to see the looks of "oh, you're the one..." on their faces.

Think its time to make plans to visit the US..

Mayor?!?! I thought he was Sherriff (darn...is that the spelling for the law or the pudding mix? ;) )...you guys go unsupervised for a little bit and total anarchy reins...

Actually the Cincinnati airport where I am landing is in Kentucky. I will be right in downtown Cincinnati (by the Reds and Bengals stadiums) I will be there auditing Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, unfortunatley the Reds or Bengals will not be in town so I will be looking for something to pass the time when I am not working.

I think they are doing them once a quarter now, and usually in conjuction with someone else, and not always at the MMTC. I'm no longer involved (miss the free breakfasts :( though). I have a couple of people that I have set up something of a benchmarking relationship. We document things for each other, etc. Anyone close enough, or planning to be in the area - give me a call or post and we'll set something up.

I wish I could make it to the expo. Our registration audit is Sept. 8th, and my sister will be in from Maine that week for a visit and our annual "Moms Gone Wild" weekend with some longtime girlfriends of ours.

There are others that join in - last year we had 14 "ladies". There is a little bar in Mancellona probably still talking about us from last year!!

I just PM'd you with the address. Tell the girl up front that you have an appointment - I am the purchasing agent, so they fend off a lot of cold calls for me.

Use to go to a resturant our there, I can't remember the name but it had a plane that looked like it crashed through the roof. It was in one of the marinas. No f'ing way!!! I belonged to the 301st (in Inkster on Beech Daly) before it was divided into two and became the 783rd. We were in the middle of the downsizing when we were sent to Saudi - so we went as the 301st and became the 783rd when we got back. I was the Carpentry and Masonry Sgt of the Repair and Utilities section. If you were in my unit - you know who I am. I believe I'm still the one and only girl carpenter they've ever had. I was Sgt. Trombley. I never used my married name in the military. I was in from 1989 - 1995.

The 70th is a stones throw from my house. I live in Clinton Twp.

I left the 300th in '81. While I was there, though I co-authored FM 31-30 EPW Operations (If my memory serves me correctly). I kept in contact with one of the other LTs through Desert Storm. He went over (he was a CPT by then). I just can't pull out his name. I spent the war at Ft. Benning awaiting ship orders (they never came - Thank God!).

Nope. There has been talk from time to time about getting together. There was even talk once about 'Cove T-Shirts'. The other suggestion that resurfaces about once a year is the 'chat' deal where people can 'chat' in real time on the site.

I met barb and a couple of folks in Michigan a few years back but really have met few people who visit the forums.

How could you ask that question with a straight font? :) If I were in that position, I would be hooking up with Marc. If he refused to meet with me, fearing that beating long overdue, :vfunny: I would perch right under his Bird Feeder and wait for him. He has to come out sometimes to feed those critters that he has named. I have a feeling that Marc isn't the stiff necked Q Guy that is sometimes portrayed here. In fact, I know it! If you (or Stew) are buying, I would recommend Meriweathers (Spelling?). It is on Telegraph just south of 696. It is a Chuck Muir chain and runs about $100 per plate.

If we are all paying our own, I would suggest the coney island on the northeast corner of Telegraph and 10 mile (that is south of 696). There is also several fast foods in the area. Both of you have more time constraints than I, so the time is up to yall.

Okay, here is the plan. We meet at the Coney Island on ten mile and telegraph (Northeast corner). If it is not there, or is closed (Its been a while since I've been down there) an alternate is the Arby's across Telegraph. Let's meet at 11:30. That gives Stew enough time to clear his meeting in the afternoon. We will meet in the parking lot.

Sounds good?

Lucinda and I hooked up (figure of speech) in Houston earlier this year. It was pretty coll meeting what had one been a faceless friend and occassional opponent (another figure of speech). Of course her husband asked her about her undies before she left home

I'm scheduled to be back in Houston in October and I'm sure we'll meet up again. Lucinda was instrumental in the finding our new home in Arkansas.

Jerry Poague, who has only visited the Cove a few times, learned about this place from me during an EMS-LA course I taught in Anaheim last December. Like many of the rest of us Jerry is trying to make a living out of this ISO mess and a few other things. I now live about a 10 minute drive from Jerry so I know we'll meet up at the ASQ meeting or something.

One chance encounter and many near misses, but mostly I have run into many Cove members in other Q&A forums, mostly the ASQNet.

I met Dom Scumaci in Chicago a few years back while we were both working for organizations with divisions in Franklin Park. We had lunch and a brief discussion about quality things and our companies. Dom recently returned to the Cove after a spell of being 'too busy'. I know how that can be.

I used to work near where Energy lived, worked in a neighboring town for a time, and we both like to fish. Still in our tiny state, no chance encounters. Thanks to Bill, I had my first avitar of myself posted giving folks here a visual aid. Hopefully it doesn't give you a head start out the door! ;)

Barb B. is nearby as well, but we have only chatted by phone a few times and we were going to get together for lunch sometime, but that plan hasn't happened yet. She has clients in CT, so there still may be a chance. Either that, I'll probably catch her giving a local ASQ section a presentation.

I once was on a business trip in Kansas City a few years back, about the time Marc had a client nearby the airport. I kept my eyes open for him (luckily, at that time Marc had a picture of himself posted, so I had something to go on), but no luck. When I returned home and had a chance to speak with Marc, we figured that we were about a day out of sync in making a chance meeting.

Other than that, I have had great connections with many of the Cove members here over the years and maintained good correspondence via email/snail-mail. I hope to meet more of you in person.

As for the t-shirts, not a bad idea, Marc. Let me know how to order one!! I enjoy being a part of this community.

Regards,

Kevin

Maacky,
Where at in Warren? We have a plant on Hoover at 9 1/2 Mile, between the Paslin building and Production Tool. Welcome.

Bob,
Metallica is one of my favorite bands, their music has a lot of depth to it. My friends always joke about my likes in music, I mainly listen to alternative and really like the 80's techno stuff. But if you put in 1 of my mixes it can range from Pet Shop Boys to Oingo Boingo to Molley Hatchet to Linkin Park. Then throw in a couple Led Zepplin and White Zombie tunes and you have, what I consider a good CD! :vfunny:
I like music but the closet I get to CW is John Prine or Little Feats.

Nothing special here in Warren. I think our best bet would be 'restaraunt row' over on Van Dyke - which I think is pretty close to you too, no?

Let me know what you all think.

I'm going to be in Grand Rapid, MI in a couple weeks I'd like to take a shot at meeting up with Badgerman.

If anyone is in the Portsmouth/Norfolk, VA area I'll be at the Renaissance Hotel in Portsmouth all next week (21-21 Sep) doin an EMS-LA course for a client.

I had dinner with Lucinda in Houston last night. The time spent was extremely enjoyable and conversation was great. We talked family and lots of shop. We also talked about quite a few of you folks here too. She is a great conversationalist and good company to be with. I'm looking forward to my next jaunt to Houston where hopefully I can meet MR Lucinda, he has to be pretty special to loan his wife out as dinner company.

Honestly, if you ever get the opportunity to meet up with other folks here in the Cove do so. I have been able to meet a couple people from here and I can tell you that every meeting has been fun. Catching up with me isn't that tricky. I do quite a bit of training (especially EMS type) as an external resource for BSI, and of course I will always recommend them, but if you review my postings you will see that I always recommend others also to present a balanced picture so to speak. Just check out their upcoming training schedule and you may find me at the other end of it.

If anyone is close by Morgan Hill, Ca I'll be there from Nov 16-21. I'll also be in Orlando from Dec 7-19. My days will be occupied for sure, but the evenings are free for the most part. Next week I'll be in New Orleans from the 4th -6th (in the French Quarter no less). Feel free to give me a shout...I'm actually a friendly guy, just ask my friend Lucinda.

Okay, November 12th is right around the corner. Where and when are we going to meet? I plan on taking the majority of the day off so I do not have to rush, plus I still want to meet up with Cari and do the tour thing.

My offer stands to anyone in the Metro Detroit Airport area of a free tour. We are 5 minutes from the airport. For those of you who are far, far away, we also have video CD's.

Cari,

If everyone else opts out, lets do lunch anyway.

db - if you can spend a little more time at lunch, you're welcome to come by our shop first as well. Your input in the forums has really helped me out on a number of things - it would behoove me for you to see exactly what I'm talking about.

As we discussed earlier, I'm only a mile from restaurant row. There's quite a variety to choose from. If we'd like to stay middle of the road in $$ and fanciness, there is a brand new Coney Island on VanDyke right near my shop. There is a Ping On and a Thai place if we have a hankerin' for Asian. If we're feeling a little more upscale (though not outrageous) - Fillipa's on Mound just south of M-59 is great.

Some of the large and built up cities were farms and fields, no street lights, no half million dollar homes, just farms and fields. That was also when gay meant happy, a gallon of gas was 25 cents, milk was under a dollar and milk had cream on the top and delivered by the milk man, margarine did not exist, and TV’s had tubes. The stores had big tube centers so you could replace your burnt out tubes and it took 10 minutes for your TV to warm up.

Now I am really showing my age!

Not too familiar with your area but do: remember taking the Bob-Lo boat, the Lions not wanting seporation from the Tigers, and the drills in school too; I don't think I would fit under that desk now.

Shopping downtown Detroit was a special experience because you could take the bus, the bus had routes from all the surrounding cities.

All Halloween costumes were made by your mom, you could eat any home made item you received from Halloween and it was customary to enter homes and enjoy hot cider and donuts.

Teachers were allowed to use the paddle and often did and any adult could correct a child.

It was customary to eat dinner as a family.

I just had to mapquest this Gaylord thing. I spent 5 years in Flint, been to Bad Axe, Traverse City, Holland, etc, but never heard of Gaylord. And why so many golf courses???

We have talked about a trip to MI - memories for mom and dad - and show the kids where we met.....and I remember how beautiful the state gets north of Saginaw....with golf being a family interest, I can start planning.

Thanks!

Bring your orange golf balls. They are easier to see in the snow!

Just in case either of you have children, you may want to consider visiting the Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City. Check it out on line at http://tc.greatwolflodge.com. They have a indoor water park and activities. It is a great place to visit. No I do not sell for them, just know how much adults and kids like it.

I will say Gaylord Rocks, not much to do except play golf, drink and travel north to the casino. What a vacation. Traverse City is nice but is major tourist trap in the summer. Gaylord hosts the annual ESPN Par 3 shootout at Threetops. It is a gorgeous short par 3 course that challenges all types of players. There are 4 Robert Trent Jones Courses, 2 Rick Smith Courses and then hundreds of little known (better managed) courses. To name a few

The Loon
Michaywe
Wild Bluff
Rock Hill

But Treetops is by far the best. 5 courses in one resort. As for the orange golf balls, did that in Iceland for kicks. Let me tell you, it sucked. Too darn cold. But living in Cali I played this weekend on a Greg Norman course, Wente, and had a ball. :biglaugh:

Traverse City is a tourist trap during the summer, that is why I suggested the lodge for the month you were planning to visit. Not many visitors at that time.

Sounds like you are into golf. I know Gaylord had events, but did not realize it was such a big deal. Sorry, I don't play golf and could not appreciate it.

I like visiting up-north and even lived in Oscoda for a bit and also lived in the UP as well. If you ever want to fall off the face of the earth move to the UP. Loved living in Oscoda. An abundance of wild life and great fishing. That is one of my all time favorite things (Salmon fishing). Just can't make a living in those areas and did not care for the small town politics.

I like Houghton Lake area too.

Sounds like you are a dis-placed Michigander, are you?

Cindy

Probably because it was in the college years, where we didn't venture too far. End of year canoing somewhere up there, possibly even near Gaylord, but I just don't recall the name. We didn't golf then.

I guess it was really 1/2 of 5 years because I was on the GM co-op plan.

I am not a displaced Michigan-er. I was born and raised in Columbus, OH. (Home of the Buckeyes) Then have not really let any grass grow under my feet since then. Found Gaylord from a friend of a friend who had a brother who knew a guy that once dated a girl who knew a cousin that had a dog who once was in a movie with Kevin Bacon(did I get 7 degrees) and the rest they say is history.

Out to dinner with reps from around the world and this guy was from the same neck of the woods as Skullsike so I asked did he know him and he was like, "yeah. he was at the center today" and I was like "no way". So anyway, we got to meet the next day. He says he got banned from here but we didn't have time to chat about it. It was a surprise to me because as ya'll know I haven't be around much lately. Anyway, it was cool.

Randy!!! What happened to you coming into town in Jan/Feb???
I never had a problem with Skullsike. He didn't post much, but when he did they very political and directed at the owner of this site. Not a good idea, particularly with the new guidelines for posting in place. He had great Louisiana Recipes which he posted in the Road Kill Thread. :vfunny: :agree:

Hey 'Cinda!!!!!!!!!!

The course cancelled out. I did spend 10 days in Dallas though. Right now it looks like there will be nothing on the training side until Oct. I do have a potential audit in May or so

It looks like I'm gonna be hooking up with some of the Michigan crowd in a couple weeks. Boy will they be surprised! ;)

Hmm, only time I have been to a golf course in Gaylord is cruising across it on my snowmobile.... (actually, I think it was in Walloon, which is near Gaylord. Visited Shadybrook C.C. this past weekend) :)

What, do you chew with your mouth open? :vfunny:

Our imagination could go wild here.

Some one (Lucinda) should tell us soon before we start making up our own stories. Wait that is not a bad idea.

No Cari, he does not chew with his mouth open. He does not use silver ware, completes his meal with opening his mouth once, and occasionally, depending of the color of the food will with his single opening of his mouth take in as much food as his cheeks will allow or to their limits and ………

Well let’s just say, the food goes flying everywhere. You are too young to here about the other loud annoyances.

:biglaugh:

Cindy, or do I mean Lucinda

Let's just say that Randy is not what you might expect. And we'll leave it there. :vfunny: So much better for you gals to be surprised! (pst Randy. Wear shorts. All the better for showing off that cork leg ;) )

Cork Leg?

That would not bother me at all.

So Randy, what type of cork do you use? Titanium is better.

Ha, ha, very funny 'Cinda. I hope I don't stain my shorts from laughing so hard. :vfunny:

I am looking forward to meeting with you guys..honest!

I've told Judi about our getting together...she's always pretty down about my being alone all the time when on the road.

Remember, I'll be on the road to recovery after spending a week in Las Vegas and another one in Toronto.

Ahem....hello?....Toronto....welcome to my neck of the woods! When you've got dates, etc., let me know and maybe we can work out a time to meet. Of course, this is assuming that there's no more snow storms...I swear the end of my driveway could pass for a ski hill now! :)

I fly into Toronto on Sunday (8 Feb) and I leave on Saturday (14 Feb). I'm staying at the Valhalla Inn. I'm in town for BSI conducting an OHSAS 18001 Lead Auditor course.

Awesome...hey...that's next week....I'll PM you tomorrow or Thursday with some possible dates, times, etc. The Valhalla is just off of the 427 and a hop-skip-and-a-jump from the airport. Easy access to downtown, too...except during rushhour.

Anything on your "Must do in T.O." list?

YES!!!

I must survive the grind of conducting a Lead Auditor course! My hours will be from 730ish in the AM to about 7PM except on Friday (test day). I will be in the protective custody ( ;) ) of a bud from Vancouver B.C.. He's supposed to take good care of me because I'm gonna sign him off to deliver the same course if he's real nice.

I should mention here that I bumped into a Cove "lurker" in an Internal Auditor course I taught in Nashville recently. Being on the shy side, she hasn't posted, but said that she has printed out reams of paper on various discussions here at the Cove.

If you're reading this, Hi Karen! :bigwave:

Yup!

I'll be in Washington state again next week doing an AS9100 lead auditor course. I'm planning to "bump" into Richard Olson again. Anyone else in the Seattle (Mukilteo) area?

Randy

Looks like the closest I'll get is Santa Clara, CA in 2 weeks. I have a 9K/14K Internal Auditor course for 3 days, then it looks like I'll be coming back to Michigan to do an OHSAS 18001 Lead Auditor course followed by the same course in Reston, VA the next week.

One of these days we'll run into each other.

What I have on the horizon after Washington is Maryland, Oregon, and Kansas. Any of those on your schedule?

Not a chance unless it's onsite for somebody. I have tentative places like Las Vegas, Chicago, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Orange County (CA), Houston (I'll get to see my buddy Lucinda again), Orlando and a couple of repeats.. I'm not even including the canadian stuff that may crop up due the 18K stuff.

Hey...just keep in mind that our winter isn't over yet. Rumblings on the weather network indicate another storm coming in for tomorrow in the Toronto area.

As much as I'm a winter gal (point me to the slopes and rinks any day!), even I'm longing for the sun and some sand. Heading down to Tampa and Cartersville (GA) in March for work...and rounding off the whirlwind week of travelling with a stopover in glamourous Whitby, Ontario. :D

Hey guy's, I'm just posting a copy of the conversation from the "Let's Meet...Chit, Chat, etc.." thread. I'm just doing this for info only and want to keep the flow there.

There I was siting in Fitzgeralds (the food and beverage joint in the Troy Michigan Hilton) and the hostess brings over to my table this thing that looked like someone had grabbed an ugly dog, shaved his fanny and made him walk backwards...db hisself had arrived!!! We of course did the intro's, exchanged the secret handshake and started to tell tall tales. In just a few minutes in walks this crusty looking old gal that probably has to refrain from looking into mirrors to avoid 7 years of bad luck....Cari Spears in the flesh!
