View Full Version : Romance - Definition of
Proud Liberal 29th September 2003, 01:57 PM Heard the word romance on TV last night which prompted my attempt at defining what that really meant without having to get up and getting the dictionary.
I'm sure mine wouldn't match theirs anyway.
romance - ro-mance, v,
game played between a man & woman where:
(a) the rules for behavior (which are totally foreign to the man) are created by the woman,
(b) the men are never told the rules,
(c) the rules vary from woman to woman,
(d) the rules can change at any time, and
(e) the degree of success at playing the game is left totally to the disgression of the woman;
successful gameplay resulting in either immediate or delayed sensual and/or sexual favours (the degree and timing left solely to the woman).
Well, that was my shot at the definition. Would anyone else like to take a stab at it?
Randy Stewart 29th September 2003, 02:51 PM I'm probably the wrong person to give an input but I can't help myself.
My guess would be that as long as it costs a lot of money, doesn't have anything to do with talking about a power rating (watts, rpms, hp, etc.), doesn't have anything to do with a computer or an illuminated screen, requires some type of a Hallmark Card and makes the guy feel either very uncomfortable or stupid.
Cari Spears 29th September 2003, 02:58 PM I have no idea what romance is. :vfunny:
ISO Cheesy 29th September 2003, 03:28 PM Man:
“Woman!! Get me a beer the game is about to start”
“What do you mean you didn’t want this for your birthday, this electric tool cost me $800.00 and it comes with a warranty.”
“Come on honey it will be electrifying, it’s “Wild Kingdom” you use to not have a problem leaving the T.V. on when we where dating??”
Food
More Food
Food that the women cooks
And…. “She looked good last night, must have been the beer goggles”
Woman:
Rose shaded glasses

See has something to do with an illuminated screen.
“What do you mean you didn’t want this for your birthday, this electric tool cost me $800.00 and it comes with a warranty.”
Has to do with a power rating.
“Come on honey it will be electrifying, it’s “Wild Kingdom” you use to not have a problem leaving the T.V. on when we where dating??”
See has something to do with an illuminated screen.
Food & More Food
Are you telling me that you don't like to go out to eat? Or is there not enough $$ spent?
Food that the women cooks
See, to inexpensive - doesn't cost enough!
"She looked good last night, must have been the beer goggles”
It's not an expensive wine - just beer. Once again doesn't cost enough! :biglaugh:
RCBeyette 29th September 2003, 03:51 PM Okay, okay...I'll be the party pooper in the group. :bigwave:
Romance is that which is shared by two (granted in some cultures, more than two) people where Person A puts the needs/wants/desires of Person B before his/her own. Thus proving that Isaac Newton was a romantic at heart. ;)
Or is that love?
Hmmm....maybe your definitions of Romance are not that far off-base.
Well, to include some of Randy's definitions, how about a text message to your special somebody during their External Audit? Includes an illuminated screen, a high-tech gadget and $$ (since I pay extra for every text message I send).

True it includes all of Stew’s “romance necessities”, but the message would still have to be viewed with Rose Shaded Glasses. There is nothing romantic about External Audits!! :vfunny: :biglaugh:

Then you're not trying hard enough, girl! :D Haven't you heard that adage, "Anything to avoid that NCR?" Oooh...wait...this isn't the ethics thread, is it?
How about a rose-coloured screen on the phone? Or just a pink phone? Granted, it would take a man very confident in his masculinity to carry around a pink phone. "It's my wife's/sister's/mother's! Honest!"

energy 29th September 2003, 08:10 PM Romance hmmmmm...When you're behind closed doors, whispering sweet somethings in the plural? :o ;)
gpainter 30th September 2003, 09:33 AM Like your definition RCB. Romance after marriage and kids is trying to get back to the point at where you started. Is it possible????

Having no experience in the field of parenting, I can't really comment except to say that I think it is possible. Watching my parents when I go over to visit, they appear to have more romance between them with me out of the house now. Of course not sure if that's because I moved out or because my Dad realized how much Mom meant to him when she was diagnosed with cancer.
Either way, I have to hope that romance does not discriminate against age, colour, gender...heck, I just hope romance does not discriminate period.

After 38 years of marriage I can say that it is replaced with something else. A sense of understanding, the meaning of every gesture and deep respect for each other. A kind of a romance that is different from the romance depicted in the movies or in books. The road is well travelled and always in need of maintenance to keep it in good condition. ;)
Randy 30th September 2003, 11:09 AM Romance? Hmmmmmmmmmmm.....
I guess that would be along the lines of leaving the room to toot

Or not pulling the blanket over her head after tooting in bed?!?!?!?!? :biglaugh:
I had a friend of mine that said he use to do that to his wife until she paid him back one time! Got him while he was still asleep.

If they're still on speaking terms, that's not romance...that's most definately LOVE!!!!!!
Pick your cliche, they almost all apply here...
"All's fair in love and war."
"Turn about is fair play."
"When the going gets tough, the tough get tootin'."

If you have to ask for a definition....you ain't got a clue.
LOL...(running for the hills)

Randy Stewart 30th September 2003, 02:17 PM After Carols remark I don't know if I should share my, truely enlightened, response or not.
Romance is taking her out to eat, carrying the tray for her and letting her have the fries that are left in the bag.
(and you wonder why I'm single!)
:biglaugh:
Randy 30th September 2003, 02:51 PM It's making dinner together and watching "Anne of Green Gables" more than once.
David Hartman 30th September 2003, 03:03 PM To me romance is:
Pulling your beloved away from whatever mundane task is being performed at the moment and taking them into your arms, looking deep into their eyes and expressing your love for them and giving reasons why (reason's that are based not on the physical, but on who they are - their character).
Then following up with sharing in whatever mundane task that they were working on, or treating them to a night out/time alone with you.
During the alone times, take time to share your dreams - then even more importantly listen to theirs. [Sometimes I wonder what my wife has given up, in order to share life with me - and it makes me appreciate her love even more.]
db 30th September 2003, 05:43 PM How about buying her a Ty stuffed kitty, a card and flowers when she is at her uttermost lowest point emotionally? Leaving a city five hours away, so you can get home before lunch, and then take her for a two hour drive just to look at the fall colors?
BTW romance is an output of love (or trying to find love).
