Greetings everyone...just to start off, this is my first post but I have found this forum to be extremely informative and helpful and I am in need of some guideance.
I work for a steel company and we are getting ready to start on our 16949 registration work to satisfy the Chrysler mandate of July 04.
My question is, do our primary operations (i.e. Cokemaking, Ironmaking and material handling) require 16949? We plan on registering our current QS area's
to 16949 but in need of clarification on the primary operations.
Any advise would be appreciated...Thanks...RR

Welcome - I would think that you would want to follow what you did for Qs. However, TS adds the section on wanting your suppliers to be registered to TS and that ISO 9001 is the first step. If you are your own supplier then you might consider just getting an umbrella certificate for your whole organization. This could have tremendous effects on improvements between your areas, or if they are external suppliers you are suppose to "encourage them" to move towards TS.
I believe the thinking is products will be more consistant throughout the supply chain if everyone has a base quality management system. Hope this helps. :bigwave:

Do these primary areas interface with the non-primary areas. If so, then IMO they would need to be registered.

I don't have my copies of the standard here to cite specific sections, but
there are a number of directions that specifically or implicitly state that you
cannot exclude segments of your business from your scope, unless they
are for non-automotive customers. So I would vote for including all primary
processes. As a follow-up, recommend that you consult the "Registration
Scheme" manual, which gives all of the registration body rules, in addition
to the standard itself.

Many Thanks!!....I would like to see if sounds applicable:
Clause 1: Scope
Quote: "This Technical Specificaiton is applicable to sites of the organization where customer-specified parts, for production and or service are manufactured"
We are considering treating the primary operations as a supplier (9000)to our rolling mills (16949) with a plan for the primary operations to achieve 16949 at a later date....
Any comments?
Thanks in advance...RR
