View Full Version : Suggestions and Wants: What would you like to see?

Marc

I'm looking at features some folks may want.

One hack I want is where users can see a summary list of all attachments to posts in a forum or something similar. I'll be working on getting a hack for this.

What suggestions do YOU have? What would YOU like to see?

Marc,

I have noted that we can no longer see where members are from (Country/State etc) on the posts. I like to see where everyone lives. Is it possible to restore it?

I wonder if it wouldn't be nice with some space between the icons in the top right corner of each post? It looks a bit cluttered there. Not really a problem, just looks.

I put the 'location' where I did as this all really sorta goes together - user name, title and where the user is from.

I think the table cell on the right side needs to be 'uncluttered', though. I'll be looking at that.

I think I liked it better when the "karma" rating was kind of "foggy" with green dots and cute phrase rather than hard numbers.
I never noticed the ICQ button on the previous incarnation. Do folks use it?
I notice that the navigation bar at the top of the page is not uniform on every page. I liked it better when the navigation bar was the same.
Thanks for making the default font Verdana - I think it is more easily readable than the cartoon font used as the previous default.
All in all, though, I like the look and speed of this version. I'm not sure how much speed is due to more efficient code and how much to new server, but the result is good.

1. I decided on a hard number - That's the 'data' part of me.
2. The ICQ, Yahoo, etc. buttons were at the bottom of posts. I have no idea whether people use them - I assume some do from time to time. I have used ICQ in the past but haven't personally opened the program in a long time other than the other night trying to get Atul.
3. Where are the navbars not consistent? I'm going to assume you mean such as the forum view vs. the thread view, as a example. Different views have different options. The nav bar of the forum view has to be somewhat different because there are different functions.
4. I like Comic Sans myself, but plan to have a style for each so it will be a matter of your chosing the style you like. I've never really done much with alturnative styles before, but plan to.

This looks great!

I can't seem to find a button for "posts since last visit". It used to look like a gift box with a ribbon.

Thanks for your hard work. You must have been very busy last weekend.

You too? Join the club, Craig... I couldn't find it either, in spite of the fact that it's smack in the middle of the screen :vfunny: : It's now called New Posts.

I really like the new format - was pleasantly surprised when I logged on after the w'end. Must have taken you ages!

Only thing I really miss is spell check! (but I have seen a discussion on that somewhere before)

are no longer at the top of the page as they are when I first enter the site from the short cut on my desktop.

If I enter by clicking on a link in my email, I never see the above navigation choices. I have discovered that by clicking on "Failure Modes" link in upper right corner, I am redirected to a page with all of those navigation links.

This is a very robust and complex program with a lot of features. Quite frankly, I'm continuously amazed you have taken on the burden of running this site for the added privilege (?:frust: ?) of subsidizing it by yourself. You sure deserve any leads your consulting business can generate from this site.

P.S. I'm Wes, not Atul.

Read Post 8, line item 2, sentence 2 in full. I didn't refer to you as Atul. I said I tried to contact Atul via ICQ.

Yes - I took a lot out of the header which was there because I felt that the duplication wasn't worth the congestion since there are links. However, if you look, all the relevant links are readily available in a nav bar that is present on every page. For personal messages, for example, there is, on every page, a 'quick links' drop down menu with that and more in the nav bar that is on every page.

I think most of this is getting used to the format and where we used to have buttons everywhere the clutter is gone.

I left the full header with all the buttons on the pages in the original site pages because on those pages you're not in the forums and I figured the 'quick links' would be more useful.

If I went back to the old style - and some vBulletin board admins say they don't like this 'style' and will - we'd be back to a mess of buttons everywhere. I don't plan to, but I like the 'cleaner' look.

I know it's not easy to deal with so much change so fast, but in a few days or so it's be 'home' again. All I did (well, the new vB style) was 'rearrange the furniture' and put a few things in the closet, so to speak.

No biggie.

I appreciate folks who cut quotes to applicable parts. It makes reading a thread much easier.

Why would I be getting posts from 1996 under "New Posts"?

Sue I tried and only get 'Posts since my last visit'. On the other hand, there were no posts in these forums prior to around June 1998 (and those were imported from UltimateBB - I brought vBulletin online in 2001) so I'd say what you're describing is impossible.

If you can post a screen shot I'll look at what's happening. I can't reproduce the failure mode described.

It may be a bit, thought, I'm off to bed. I think I'm coming down with the flu...

Sue

I noticed that when I did a search, it brought up threads where I was listed as being from New Britain, CT. I never claimed that hole as my place of origin. It was a year ago that my former company gave me that dreaded Christmas present. Other than that, I couln't be more pleased with the new features. :bigwave:

Sue Any details you can give me will be appreciated. have you tried it again? What happened?

I don't doubt something is happening but I need more details from you.
I noticed that when I did a search, it brought up threads where I was listed as being from New Britain, CT. First I'm assuming, energy, you're talking about a standsard search and not the 'New Posts' link (which is technically a search) Sue is talking about.

I'll look at rebuilding users. All the messages should be giving the location you have in your profile.

But - energy, check and see if the posts with the old address were before 2001? It may be those were from the import of the UltimateBB threads a couple of years ago.

Um... About the layout. I must confess that I liked yesterdays colours (different shades of blue on white) better than todays mix of blue and yellow on white. No big deal, just my opinion.

Could we have a few styles with different colour schemes to choose from?

/Claes

Marc
10th December 2003, 07:43 AM
Over time, I plan to have other color schemes. But I'm not going to get into a hurry. How many web sites that you visit give any choice at all?

The only changes from yesterday were:

1. Changing the navbar to the same color as the other half of the table - I didn't like the out-of-balance / half-and-half colors.

More important to me, the white on pale blue was hard for me to read - they blended together. For my old eyes, I need contrast.

2. Alternating table colour - the second colour didn't stand out as much as I wanted. I chose a pale yellow and tried it in 5 browsers plus my PC IE browser and the colour is not bright on any of them. I did this for you specifically because last time I used a yellow I like you complained it was too bright for you.

3. Change table 'footer' to a dark red to set it off as I did before in the previous style (pre-Gamma).

I'm looking at a lot of issues right now. After this month I should have a base style established. At that time Atul will be free to make some styles addressing colours as he did before. But before I get the 'main' style set, anything he does with a 'style' is subject to being 'reverted' as there are special templates and such which will be changing as I settle on a master layout.

Barring a true readability issue I don't want to start tweaking colours for everyone. I really hoped in this thread to address issues more along the lines of functions and layout rather going into details such as who wants what shade of what colour where. There is no way I could deal with making a style for everyone with the colours they want. You don't like bright yellow. I like it. Someone else may not like yellow at all.

That said, if there is a readability issue that's another story.

Well, back to bed. I felt a bit better last night but overnight my stomach went south adding to the 'this is not fun' of being sick.

Claes Gefvenberg
10th December 2003, 08:11 AM
No worries. Like I said, no big deal, and I do agree that this shade of yellow is much better than the one you used the first time.

Btw: Be prepared. That flu seems to have a tendency to get a second wind just when you think you're getting better. It happened to me as well as to several friends.

I've mentioned this in posts before, but I like Harrington Group's Document Control software. You can download a 30 day free trial to see how it can be used at your place of business. If you don't like it, or it is unsuitable for you, just let the 30 days expire. Then you have only read "rights". No obligation to purchase.
No, I do not work for them. Try Harrington-Group.com.

New Britain conjurs up bad memories...... :ko: When you just use the regular search option, it doesn't take you to these old ones. :evidence:

Marc - I have figured out what I want out of this site. (stop reading here if you do not want to waste a lot of time!)

I want every questions I ever ask to be answered with the best answer, with no sarcastic remarks (yea like that will ever happen). I want all of my work done by others on this site - especially some of the GURUS. AND if that is not enough, I want to win the lotto, golf every day, and live a long and happy life with my wife and daughter.

If you can pull all of that off then you truely are "THE GREAT ONE". Until then I will settle for this being one of the best resources on the web for quality / business type information, as well as a great place to come and learn and have fun. Thanks Marc.

See - I told you to stop reading. :ko: :ko: :thanx:

Basic navigation is really pretty simple and it has always been this way. I just put in 'Buttons' which I took out. Note that this is really a 'convention' any more, particularly in php environments. See attachment 1.

Now that I'm back online, I think I answered at least part of this. Oh my...

Marc
12th December 2003, 06:07 AM
I really like the new format. As an FYI: vBulletin did a major 'style' change. The idea was to reduce clutter and 'simplify' the interface. Many people are complaining in the vB forums because their users liked the old format (style, layout, whatever). I lke the new layout, all in all. But - there are a lot of options. When I get caught up, I'll address layout issues more comprehensively. So far, I like the lack of 'clutter', but we can discuss layout. Right now I think a major issue is the layout is so different that folks are used to the old layout and thus things are confusing. An example is the navigation where there always has been a 'navbar' but it was small and I had big buttons in the header for many major links.

posted 27 March 2001 10:02 AM This happens because the 'site search' index includes posts from the old UltimateBB (UBB) forums posts (all of which were imported into the vB database, for what it's worth). In the vB forums your current 'address' is correct.

Marc,
Glad to hear you're feeling better...influenza sucks.

Claes,
Since I have stolen your link generation technique...when I am writing a post and want to use a $5 word, like illiterate or bourgeois, I just copy and past the word into Word to get it spellchecked. Using a dictionary is an interesting suggestion, I have The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, copyright 1973, 1550 pages on my desk.

-icyFor those who use the Google header, a fast and simple technique is to either type or paste the suspect word in the box plus the word "definition."

So, "bourgeois +definition" will bring up a list of definitions (especially handy for those of us who may be using WIFI on a notebook computer and don't want the burden of carrying a ten pound dictionary around, too.) This technique may help when we are confused about "peak" versus "pique."

If you misspell the word as "bourgois," Google may ask
Did you mean: bourgeois +definition (http://www.google.com/search?num=100&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&newwindow=1&safe=off&q=bourgeois+%2Bdefinition&spell=1)

Just a fun thing to know. (I have my Google bar set up to open a new window, so I can just close it when I'm done and don't have to wait for my original page to reopen.)
