View Full Version : New Server - 2003-12-29 - Report Problems HERE

I didn't make this public - I really didn't expect to do this until mid-January.

Bottom line is there were a number of problems with the Server Beach server which, as I understand it, would have required a server change anyway. I decided to get a server at Server Matrix - the 'small server' end of The Planet.

I've gone through all the testing I could alone. Hopefully all will go well.

You took us by surprise again... :vfunny: Anyway: this is probably as good a time as any to do a server switch, while the going is slow due to the holidays.

You seem to have made a sterling job. From what I've seen thus far, everything seems to be in prime condition.

It's just a 'plain Jane' FreeBSD server. No control panels, no frills. Hopefully the DNS servers are set up correctly.

This should be the last switch for a long time. So far, everything appears to be working - even the 'Archive' link for spiders. On the Beach server we never did get that to work and I was seeing hundreds of 404 errors every day because so many spiders had archived threads that way.

I do have 1 script I have to play with, and as soon as the DNS changes propagate I have to change the configs with the IP to Elsmar.com - but those are easy to do.

So far so good!

Looks okay to me so far. Noticed the Chat Room option is no longer there...cancelled due to lack of participation?

I can put them in here and probably will - just because it's easy. But I haven't seen anyone really use them so it wasn't a priority. I really planned to do this in early January but ended up finding an excellent server person who walked me through everything in 2 days - step by step. In contrast, setting up the last server took about 3 weeks - things wouldn't work, tried this, tried that, etc. And never did get everything working. So - in a way I wasn't prepared for what so far has been a fast, practically flawless server setup.

Right now I've kinda frozen things until the DNS changes propagate. I wasn't even going to give out the IP but then figured, what the heck.

If the DNS propagates and everything is set up correctly here, and mail starts coming in (I know it's sending mail) I'll be a happy person.

This appears to be a bit faster than the last server as well.

In my User CP, for threads being replied to, before it used to show only the ones where I had participated AND when someone else had replied. Now it seems to be showing the ones I have particpated AND when I have replied...cluttering it up a bit.

Hmmmm. Nothing should have changed. i did rebuild the database, threads, forums, user records and such but that shouldn't have changed. I don't use that view much but I'll take a look. Maybe it's a setting.

A screen shot of what you're seeingmight help.

If I remember correctly it's always been that way for me...

One thing for CI may be to get the post back to where you do not have to move the screen left to right to read the post. It may be my new computer. I do not know, it is no big deal, more of a convience. It all seem good and a lot faster.

If you scroll all the way down, you'll find a selection of styles in the bottom left corner.... I'm certain that one of them will suit you.

I monkeyed around with a few of them and they don't center the page. You can still scroll back and forth. What resolution? :thanx:

Attached a shot of what I was talking about. Before the change, it never showed threads that I had responded to with my name there. It would, for example, just shown the one that Claes had replied to.

It doesn't affect the functionality of the site, so I'm not overly concerned about it. Just makes things a bit cluttered, but if no one else has a concern with it, don't worry about it.

I use 1024 x 768 resolution, which seems to be a bit more than in Roxane's example. There is also a sheet for 800 pixels wide resolution. Maybe that one works better?

800 x 600 is really small. I've been at 1024 x 768 or better for a couple of years now so it's hard to remember what it's like at 800 x 600.

I already have four eyes. At 1024 x 768 I would need eight. :vfunny:

This is what 800x600 looks like on a 17"monitor. Sometimes it's aligned on the left and you have to center it to read it in one shot. Not a problem. Just following up. :vfunny: See the large gaps on the bottom scroll bar?

Hey yoyo heads,

Let's not forget to "maximize" our screens. That reduces the amount of scrolling that idiot children have to do. Hey, I'm one. Don't feel lonely! :bigwave:

I won't touch that with a 10ft (uncalibrated) pole, Boss. What's in your closet?, well, it scares me. Great job on the site and a happy New Year. Yes, it's hand licking in its most blatant form. But, it doesn't change the facts. The site is operational, and besides a couple of idiots like db and me, up to snuff. See you through the New Year. After the New Year. Whenever. Can I take this opportunity to tell you that your tolerance band has expanded to something that even I can deal with? :agree: :thanx:

Let's not forget that the right side contains advertisements. :bonk:

This is the page view today and I didn't change a thing. :bonk: See the scroll bar is full and the page is centered. :bonk:

Marc:

I would also like to thank you for a seemingly seamless switchover. No problems on my end, and it does seem faster. The ads also are unobtrusive, and "fit into" the context of the Cove.

Thanks, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Actually, the ads may slow some browsers down. And they 'call home' every time a page loads. But I don't see much difference.

if you ever REALLY want to see how fast the server is reacting - as opposed to your connection - look at the very bottom of any page - like this one - and you'll see something like this:

Page generated in 0.14739394 seconds (87.94% PHP - 12.06% MySQL) with 15 queries.
[Debug Mode OFF] [PHP v4.3.2RC4] [GZIP disabled] [Server Load: 0.09 » 0.06 : 0.01]

Happy New Year to you as well! We're having fun now!

Happy New Year to you as well! We're having fun now!

Same to you and all the "Covers". :topic: Taking a bus to the Mohican Sun for some slot machine action, and, following the Sage's advice, no drinking and driving. How about drinking and riding the bus? :vfunny: Kissies, y'all! :vfunny:

Kisses?? Yeeech! At least get a shave first... :biglaugh: ;)

Oh, yes: Before I forget: Happy new year, all!

I haven't been able to open "Who's on line" this morning. I get a screen that says fatal error something or other. Anyone else?

Marc
5th January 2004, 11:48 AM
Slow right now, but no problem here. Anyone else?

Exactly what does the screen say? Including error code if it gives one.

And your:
Machine type?
OS and version?
Browser?

Not withstanding our DSL connection, very very fast, seeing who's on line. ;)

Screen says: Fatal error: Call to undefined function: exec_header_redirect() in/usr/local/www/data-dist/Forums/forumdisplay.php on line 74

Machine type - Acer Veriton 7200D (please don't laugh, there's nothing funny about working with this thing every day!! Talk about "You get what you pay for" I'd like to strangle the person who ordered these! )

OS and version - I don't know what that means. I'm as computer illiterate as one can be and still use one.

Browser - I think Internet Explorer - is that a browser?

Seems as though it may be my end - right after I last posted, I got an error message that told me Internet Explorer needed to close down, blah, blah, blah. About 6 months or so ago we networked our computers and a bunch of us got these new Acers. We are still working out some bugs. Thanks!

I sorta figured it was a browser issue. I've been using Who's Online a few times today watching the spiders and while it has been slow, it has been working for me.
