Not really guys, I tried to change my name but could not. My problem, not yours.

Marc, if you can make the change for me I will be grateful. I would rather be known by "AL" than "pancreas".

Energy,

Yes, people should know about the purpose of a pancreas. But although important, I just use it because I can remember it because I was in the hospital for it. Very painful but I use it as a logon for a few sites. You have me down to a tee Willy!!!!! :bigwave:

Your 'password' is the same - I don't know what it is - and I can't get that from the software - so I hope you remember it because you may have to 'log in' again. I don't know for sure. Never done this before....

Had to share this...

In a previous 2 day pass to Marc's files, I came across a funny cartoon about "Gang Auditing" (a couple old dudes on motorcycles talking about low riding downtown and gang auditing some people). I had it hanging outside my office on my last job and my audit team thought it was a riot.

I began a new job a few weeks ago and quickly discovered two things:
1. My staff was somewhat lacking in humor, and...

2. the Internal Audit program was poorly designed and driving everyone nuts.

So I quietly hung the Gang Auditor cartoon on the "Audit" bulletin board, labeling it, "QA humor". Let's relax and look at the light side, folks. I came in this morning to find that someone had removed it...office buzz was: some evil auditee had snuck in and put it up to "get us". :vfunny:

Oh my. I have my work cut out for me! Time for Humor101!

It's better...it's important to learn how to poke fun at yourself, (or your job) in order to stay sane. Once folks knew it's ok to do that, they opened up. I encourage it. Humor is a great stress reliever.

Thanks for asking!

Hello folks. Hope the New Year finds you happy and healthy.
I've spent some time with my kids in PA and for the most part it was good.
I had to go to court over the child support thing so that was the only down side to the visit.
With the requirements for insurance on my son I've decided to get back into quality full time. I'm interviewing at company that does plating on fasteners. It's a smaller company and it looks like a good fit. I'll be back in as Quality Manager if things go right. They're looking at 9K2K and 14000 in March so it will be a trial by fire. But what's life without a few challenges?
Just thought I'd let you know what was up.

Greg, you know I thought of that but didn't say anything:bonk:

Cari, I'll be closer than you think. In Madison Hts. Depor Company off of Crooks. Look out!!!
I got the call today, I go to lunch with the President and Sales Manager tomorrow at Big Rock (off of Maple). The "can he do the job" and the questions about ability I think are over. It's the "does he fit the culture/company" is what is left. At least that's what I feel.
I think it's a good fit. These guys are good. They actually gave me their Quality Manual and said "This is what we do and how we operate"! And you know what? It IS!!!!
I like this place.
Yes, I have to wear a tie and suit tomorrow, but I haven't felt more "in place" with a company since I left the Navy.
We will do some great things!
I'll be in touch, really!!!!!:thanx:

The lunch went great, and I received good feedback this morning. I was informed yesterday that I was the only interviewee that had made it to the lunch stage. The GM has a couple more to interview but he told the recuriter that unless one of them just blew him away that I'd be made an offer Friday or Monday.

BTW Cari, I guess I was still in shock from my first trip to the unemployment office. Depor is in Troy not Madison Hts. The unemployment office that I was dehumanized and treated like crap at was in Madison Hts. What an experience that was.:bonk:

I will say that they have come a long way in this state. Maybe it was because this time I was interviewing/searching through the Veteran's section. But, about 10 years ago I stormed out of the UE Office and told them where they could park their check. A couple of days later I went back, rather meekly, talked to another person who handed me my check without incident. I made sure that I avoided that fat lady (employee) who I invited to stand in line while I treated her like she treated everybody. It was an ugly scene. :vfunny: Security!!!! :p

First time, eh? For years its been a joke so I expect that until now you laughed but never understood the reality. It changes one's reality when you're the one in the line. There is an ex-congressman with cancer who recently changed his views on medical legalization of marijuana. He said he changed his view now that he understood the enormity of the situation (i.e.: he's on the receiving end - he may die). It's like men making laws about abortion - they have no way to understand on a 'personal' level.

What is interesting is you point out that Troy and Madison Hts. treated you differently, if I understood your post correctly.

Many years ago I did unemployment for several months. Not only was it not fun, it was humiliating, not to mention dehumanizing. I believe I have read in some states it's mostly able to be done on the internet now days. What a difference.

In your case, it's appears pretty much a short stop gap. Consider yourself lucky. Think of how many people are going through that for en extended period. Not to mention how many people run out of unemployment (which takes them off the 'unemployed' status in US government statistics - which in large part is why the reported unemployment level is so low - it is estimated to be over 9% when this is factored in).

It's good to hear everything is working well for you! Good luck!

I've only had one experience with the UE folks. When I came back from Saudi Arabia in the first Gulf War - I returned to find I had been laid off. Now everyone knows their not supposed to do that to activated reservists, but it was a legitimate layoff. I was the Asst. Supervisor of QA, they had the worst two quarters in their history, and they decided to eliminate all Asst. Supers and distribute the work between other functions. All together they let over a dozen people go. They offered me another position, at a few dollars less an hour. I opted for the unemployment while I looked for another job. UE didn't give me the least bit of hassle (of course the offer of another position was not documented as the company was grateful that I was not fighting the layoff), the only thing they did do was verify with the company somehow that the layoff was not a result of my military service. I was 22, still living at home, with no significant bills - so I figured what the heck.

How long were you on unemployment?

I got home to find I was laid off on May 20th, I was newly employed by the end of August. So, about 3 months. Though I have to admit, I took my time about it. I'd just spent 6 months living in a tent in the desert, separated from my then boyfriend (who is now my husband). I had some fun for a few weeks, then started looking.

QA Asst. Super sounds fancier that it was at that place. At the time, I was making less than $10.00, it really wasn't hard to find work. Today, it would cripple our family.

Randy, congratulations in advance - sounds like you are pretty solid there. If you are going to be working in Troy, look up the Troy Cafe. They have the best breakfast I have ever found and one of the lowest prices in Michigan. The people are friendly and the portions are so big you will need to take a friend. No, I don't own stock :biglaugh: We used to have a plant in Troy until we built the new one in Wixom. I sure do miss stopping in there for breakfast. Now I go to Leon's across from the Ford Plant entrance in Wixom - also highly recommended.

...Today, it would cripple our family.

I've been working here since Sept 2000. For 8 weeks or so before that I had been unemployed.

The owner asked me to do something that I was not comfortable with and it escalated into an ugly scene. When I said I would not do it, she said "I own this place. If you don't like it you can pack up your office and go." So I did. I let my temper get the best of me, I could have done what she asked until I found another job. I didn't even bother to go to UE, I knew the company would fight it because, technically, I had quit. I still contend I was fired.

My sister had recently had twins, her maternity leave was up, so I babysat for that summer while I looked for a job. This also helped out my sister, since she didn't have to pay me nearly as much as it would have cost anywhere else. Without childcare costs of our own (since I was home) we managed.

What time is your flight arriving? I have church from 6:30 til around 9:00 pm but with this amount of notice could find a replacement.

I could assist you and take you directly to the car rental facility if you know which one it is. And just a side note, if you are paying for the rental car out of your own pocket, you can save a lot of money just by renting 10 miles away from the airport. Airport tax if very high.

As far as not looking like your picture, who cares?

If your flight arrives early enough why don't we all plan on welcoming Randy into town by meeting and having dinner at a convenient location for all of us?

I'm leaving saturday @ 7AM

Lunch will probably be locked up

As of now I'll be available every evening, including Tuesday

I most likely won't be able to see much because of the course hours

As for facilities, I'd love to but I'm only free between 5PM and 8AM the following day

Getting together in the evening is the best bet on us hooking up. I'm checking on the car today...I just may taxi down and shuttle from the hotel to where ever I need to go. Plenty of time to plan...3 weeks anyway. I will definately be at the Hilton on Crooks

If we all meet on tuesday evening we can shuttle you, or at least I can take you to our meeting place since I will be going there anyway (If you trust me for the hour drive!).

I, for one, approve. I'm falling asleep at the switch. What ever happened to the chat rooms? :vfunny: :bonk:
I'm looking at chat room integration now. I don't think they're used very often, but if the hack works, it should integrate so if you're logged into the forums your auto-magically log in to the chart room with same user name and such - mainly a click link. It also should be possible to have a small window listing who is actually in the chat rooms on the main forums page.

I might get this done before Sidney does the User Group on the 10th.

Actually I'm looking at a 'portal' type of home page which will show a number of things - who's in chat, recent threads, etc. I'm also goint to activate RSS feeds.

Lots to do!

That would be a nice feature. Before, you really couldn't tell if anybody was in there. I would see, 1 user and it would turn out to be me! ;) Also, being able to chat could reduce the amount of Off Topic posts meant to further communication between 2 or more members. :thanx:

If we are talking about a Fri evening, it should be no problem. Otherwise, it will all depend on my schedule. I know there are a lot of places along 16 mile (Big Beaver) between John R and Livernois. Can't place any names at the moment (other than the White Castle at Big Beaver and Dequindre)

Ok sports fans this post may be more appropriate in the "Bump into a Cover" thread but what the hay?

There I was siting in Fitzgeralds (the food and beverage joint in the Troy Michigan Hilton) and the hostess brings over to my table this thing that looked like someone had grabbed an ugly dog, shaved his fanny and made him walk backwards...db hisself had arrived!!! We of course did the intro's, exchanged the secret handshake and started to tell tall tales. In just a few minutes in walks this crusty looking old gal that probably has to refrain from looking into mirrors to avoid 7 years of bad luck....Cari Spears in the flesh!!! I wasn't too concerned with how people would react seeing these 2 with me because the hotel at the time was full of Wiccan's, Druid's, Mystic's, Pagan's and others attending their annual Convocation (convention of sorts).

With all that said...I had a great time talking and just socializing with two of my good friends that I met here in this place that Marc has so graciously provided, and I think they enjoyed it too. The conversation was really beyond my ability to bring to life here, and hopefully Dave or Cari can expand upon my poor attempt. We spent nearly 2.5 -3 hours together and I hated to see it end.

Dave and Cari are really fun (and nowhere near look the way I described, even though Dave is nowhere near as pleasant to look upon as Cari).

Guy's, I really want to get with you 2 again.

Honestly, all of you other Cover's should never pass up the opportunity to meet our friends here. We may disagree at times, and we may occasionally err in our attitudes, but by and large we are in the end workmates and bud's.

I'm gonna copy this post and plant it in the "Bump into..." thread also just to make sure folks see it.

OK. Let me see if I understand Marc's position on this:

Randy is a professional Quality person.
Marc and others from the Cove are also professional Quality persons.
Randy and these other professional Quality persons had a conference about Quality topics which directly or indirectly affected Randy's professional interaction with his client.
Therefore:

Randy would have been (and will be in all such future conferences) within the scope of his professional duties to bill the client extra for this conference and to pay the expenses [at least] of the other professionals and perhaps split fees with them.
In addition, I understand Marc audited Randy's teaching methods and style with a view to giving "dispassionate" feedback and helping Randy become a better platform presenter. In which instance, Marc would have been entitled to a fatter share of the fee split.
The logic makes perfect sense to me. That Marc is certainly proof that even young guys of 53 have some business sense.

Re: LAX - life is different everywhere with intensified inspection in past 2-1/2 years. Whenever I was in LA on business, I stayed in Marina Del Rey, regardless of where my business was. Relatively short commute to LAX (no freeway jams) and lots of good restaurants open late.

No, actually I don't know why, but am curious......I thought it really WAS because of the wind, which was blowing well every time I have been in Chicago! Hershal"The Windy City" --- New York Sun editor Charles Dana, tired of hearing Chicagoans boast of the world's Columbian Exposition (1893), dubbed Chicago the "Windy City."
Wind effect in Chicago:
Two major physical phenomena contribute to a "microclimate" within the "Loop" (so-called portion of the central business district which is encircled by elevated commuter rail tracks.):
1) Lake Michigan: during the day in summer, land heats faster than water, resulting convection creates on-shore breeze which dissipates within short distance from lake. At night, lake acts as heat sink and the air current reverses direction as lake heats air above it.

2) Tall building/narrow street combination: during the day, sun strikes and heats the tall buildings causing convection current. Outside air rushing through narrow, canyon-like streets is subject to Venturi effect. Similarly, any ambient wind is deflected by tall buildings, also causing Venturi effect.

On a day when the wind is officially recorded at 20 mph at O'Hare Field, building managers string safety lines for pedestrians in the various Plazas in the Loop, because winds can be magnified 2 or 3 times (40 to 60 mph), literally knocking folks off their feet and into the street.

One benefit: this natural wind tunnel effect keeps the streets swept clean of loose trash!

Some building windows have been known to pop out as a result of the Bernoulli effect (dangle two dollar bills about an inch apart and blow between them. Counterintuitively, they come together instead of spreading apart.)

Long Beach is great...especially for coast-to-coast (Jet Blue). It has the old So. Cal feel to it in many ways similar to the old Ontario (no jet ramps). Of course Jet Blue also uses Ontario, and I used to prefer Ontario when I lived in Barstow. My next selections were John Wayne (Orange County to you non-Cal folks) and Long Beach....I'd go to Vegas before I'd use LAX.

For the miscelaneous (did I spell tha right?) subject look in the Coffee Break Threads. If you don't find one that fits, start your own...we'll jump in.

It had a "friendly" feel to it. In the 70's when I practically commuted there, the baggage handlers were a lot more considerate of checked luggage, since you could get off the plane and watch them unload the baggage before going into the terminal.

:topic: I made it a point on one visit to drive straight from Long Beach Airport to go see Cal Worthington (of the infamous car commercials) and was bitterly disappointed that he was nowhere on the premises. My favorite commercial of his was, "This is my dog, Spot. (with a giant bear on a leash)" Johnny Carson used to do a wicked takeoff on Cal and his commercials.

Randy,

Care to meet before you check in? I am five minutes from the airport and there is a very nice restaurant close by and the express way is just up the road?

[QUOTE=Wes Bucey]Sure! Give us some details. Where you staying? What are you in town for - audit or conference or family?

I will be in town the evenings of 21/22 April, at the Hampton Inn North Shore, 5201 Old Orchard Road. You can see it from the freeway (or is it toll road at that point?) and they have a fair restaurant in the lower level.....good place to meet.

Wednesday, April 21, is my most likely target date. I'll clear my calendar for the entire evening (that's what VCR's are for, right?) Anybody else want to visit with Hershal Brewer, the reigning guru of Metrology?

Hey Stew we missed you last night. Hope everything is well.

I had the pleasure of meeting Randy Daily! And it was a pleasure.

I arrived shortly after 5:30 dressed in appropriate attire (disappearing cloak, etc. just in case Randy was embarrassed to be seen with me). Asked at the desk where Fitzgerald’s was and the clerk immediately asked if I was there to meet Randy Daily. Randy really has a lot of fans. After a security check to ensure I was not carrying weapons of mass destruction, I was greeted by Randy. We ate, drank and talked (not necessarily in that order). Randy was good about my appearance and took it like a champ. He asked me cover my face while we ate so he would not get an upset stomach. I understand Randy, don’t worry and I am looking into that mask idea you had. We were interrupted only four times by fans. We probably would have had more interruptions but Randy beat them with his bat and they stayed bowed at his feet.

And I do apologize for being such a lush too. Next time I won’t drink so much. I could not help myself after you told me that you had a $200 bar allowance; I saw your beer and had to drink it, I saw my beer and had to drink it. If the waiter did not bring 6 bottles at a time I could have walked out on my own. After a couple of hours (time flew by) it was time for me head home, we said our good-by’s (all three Randy’s and myself). Thanks for the limo ride home Randy.

Did you talk to your boss about the increase in the bar allowance? :D When you visit Romulus, the limo driver can be the designated driver again….

At any rate, I enjoyed your company and look forward to our new meet.

Good luck with that secret project!

Hershal,

Be careful meeting with Wes...the guy is a one man roadshow and an absolute trip...so if you're an "A" personality, forget it ;)

Wes and I met last night for a couple of hours and had a great time doing the guy thing in the hotel pub where I'm at. Great conversation, some "majical" entertainment, and fairly good pizza contributed to the evening.

Wes and I are bud's now :D

Wes and I are bud's now :DAll just a result of being with a fellow "big person." I assure you the feeling is mutual.:agree:
:magic: Thaumaturgy or magic or majik - whatever it's called, is always a fun icebreaker! At least the bar attendant was impressed.

:biglaugh: Randy was a great host - he (or his employer for the day) bought dinner and drinks :thanx: and allowed me to tip our long-suffering bar attendant, Kimberly.
If you had driven up, as I suggested, Marc, you could have gotten at least a free drink and lots of sympathy for your travails. My round trip was about 140 miles (Randy was two counties over from me.)

HershalOK. Hershal is also a busy road warrior like Randy. I caught him by phone at DFW, waiting for a plane to Toronto. After a night and day in Toronto, he flies to Chicago late Wednesday. Dinner is tentative Thursday evening at his hotel in Skokie. Anyone able to join us?

I'm not a road warrior :horse: like some, so I lack essential equipment such as mobile computing power.

So, as I am going to be in beautiful downtown Milwaukee (Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning and without a car) I will be offline and out of touch with respect to the Cove. But if I happen to run into anyone ...

See y'all next week (except for jstain who will be at the same place as me). (Does that really count as "running in to" another Cover?)

It's going to be chilly to a guy from Georgia. High temp will only be in low to middle 50's, overnight lows in the middle 30's (maybe even some frost.)
Going to drop in on ASQ while you're there?

Make sure you see the museum on the lakefront that looks like an ultra-modern sailing ship. Almost as cool as the opera house in the harbor in Australia.
For a hoot - be sure to find and drink in the Safehouse http://www.safe-house.com/

HershalOf course, what Hershal fails to mention is that Chicago made him feel just like he was home - a giant traffic jam on the freeway next to his hotel! Oh yes, I was caught in that traffic jam - it took 25 minutes to go the last mile to his exit.

When I got there, though, the conversation was nonstop (well - bathroom breaks) for 4-1/2 hours.

-WesWes,

Sorry, the office has been overloading me since I got back. Actually, it is refreshing for me to go to Milwauke (in spring/summer/autumn) in order to get back down to comfortable temperatures. Yes, I've been in Georgia for 5 years and South Carolina for 20+ years before that -- but I was born in England and grew up there and in Canada, Colorado and Alaska. Add in working in a calibration lab for over 20 years ... in my body's opinion anything over 25 C and 50% humidity is unfit for human habitation. Mr. Carrier's invention of air conditioning is a wonderful thing.

The purpose of the trip was to spend two days at the ASQ offices, working on Certified Calibration Technician exam questions.

Thanks for the picture, and particularly its caption. I've seen that building every time I have been there, from the window of the airport shuttle, and I had yet to find out what it was!

I've heard of the safe-house but have not had a chance to go yet ... is it within walking distance of ASQ?

(BTW, Chicago traffic is not worse than Atlanta traffic, there's just more of it.)

GraemeI have to dig out a map myself to check proximity of Safehouse to ASQ. Why not try Mapquest in the meantime? Plot the two addresses, ASQ and Safehouse.

Even I haven't been inside the art museum, yet. It is on my schedule for this summer (only a 90 minute drive, including finding parking, from home.)

Even I haven't been inside the art museum, yet. It is on my schedule for this summer (only a 90 minute drive, including finding parking, from home.)Safehouse is just east of the river and one block north of ASQ. Plankinton runs north and south on west side of river, ASQ is
American Society for Quality
600 North Plankinton Avenue
Front street is short street on east side of river and runs north and south in 700 block.
Safe House is (http://www.safe-house.com (http://www.safe-house.com/)) My pledge to get in:
To the best of my cunning capabilities, I will tell no one that the stately office of International Exports, Ltd. (est. 1868) at 779 North Front Street, is in fact a craftily contrived "front" for the Safe House.

THEN. . .(from ASQ)
On Plankinton Ave, head north two blocks to Wells St. Turn right on Wells and continue over the bridge one block to Water Street. Parking lots in the area are shown at Parkmilwaukee.com (http://65.110.80.203/parking/map.cfm?method=static&map=east). You're on your own from here.

Psst! If you've been followed, . . . SHAKE YOUR TAIL! and stealthily slip into the distinguished office of International Exports Ltd. through the red door beneath the gas lights. (use full screen view to get clear GIF of map)
