We are automotive supplier and want to apply for the certification of ISO/TS16949. Our company has founded less than six months. Now we begin the pilot of ECU. What should I do to keep the identification and traceability in the product realization process. Does someone have a procedure about identification and traceability? thanks.

Welcome to the cove!

With out a bit more information this can be general, but we use shop travelers. The travelers list the item name, part number each process, with inspection of pass or fail etc. All items are identified. When traceability is required, each lot is assigned a specific number in addition to the other traveler information. The traveler lines up with our control plan. No process should ever be missed since each previous process must be singed off and passed inspection. Sometimes we track heat and lot numbers and this has worked very well. I was able to trace back two years once and prove to a customer that their failed part was not one of ours. Saved us a lot of money.

Please remember that you need to present a QMS that has been in existence for 12 months of TS

Organizations subscribing to ISO/TS 16949:2002 certification has to provide 12 months data. If a newly set-up organization, the CB will audit and upon recommendation will issue a Letter of Conformance. With sufficinet 12 months data and by the next surveillance audit, if "everything" is in order, the CB will convert the "Letter" into "Certification"

You might want to read some of the threads which deal with identification and traceability in general. The reason is for each component or assembly, and within each company, this will be different. For example, if you mold a rubber grommet that is used with a screw that holds a simple assembly (not critical) your traceability (in a number of aspects) will be different than if you made air bag assemblies which are individually serialized and component lots are tracked.

In addition, there are several aspects:

Traceability within your company of components, if applicable, and
Traceability of the assembly or product as complete, and
Customer specific requirements relating to identification and traceability.

Don't forget there often are links to labeling not only of the product but also of packaging.
