In china, ISO consulting is not too optimistic.I am surprised. Recently, we learned the People's Republic of China had a very high number of registrants to ISO9001:2000. Are these organizations all doing their own research and development to achieve certificates of registration? It appears there is widespread acceptance in China of the concept of REGISTERING versus merely being COMPLIANT. This is unlike the United States where there is a lot of resistance to registration (even among Quality professionals!)

However, when an organization in the United States makes a decision to pursue registration, it looks for the most efficient and speedy way to accomplish this. This usually means hiring an outside consultant to bring in knowledge and experience to help avoid confusion and uncertainty. A good consultant can easily cut the lead time between decision to proceed and achieving registration in half. This is time the organization can use to sell goods and services to customers who demand ISO registration before purchasing.

In most cases, even mediocre consultants bring value over and above their fee to the registration process.

It seems to me the best course for a consultant is to push (market) this value-added aspect of his service.

Like every Tom, Dick & Harry, there are equally many Tians, Dengs and Hans in PRChina. Just throw a stone into the "people mountain, people sea", (crowded habitant!), or call it out and you will find dozens and scores and hundreds of consultants in town.

I have been to China for the past seven (7) years and have seen the birth and growth of ISO certifications interms of CBs, organizations and consultants. There are many over-qualified senior govt. officers, young fresh gradutes and struggling quality experts trying to make a living out there. There are many over-night, fly-by-night and parachuting (from Taiwan & Singapore) con-sultants. There are too many ISO 9000 consultants in China as almost every one is claiming to be one.

But there is a shortage of specialized MDD or TS2 consultants. Towgx, you should not just embark on ISO 9001 but also the other specialized QMS. As for the EMS, I am sure you know that the Chinese govt. is controlling the qualification of EMS auditors and consultants, you may find it tough going if you lacks of these merits.

All the best...

I focus on ISO9000 consulting, but I also embark on ISO14000, TS2,process improvement etc. Now in China, there are a big potential market need for system, process improvement consulting, but there is a shortage of specialized consultants although there are so many many consultants and ISO consulting companies.

Widen your horizons and spread your wings, pal. China is at your feet.

Good inputs.

What about demand of consultancy on ISO/IEC 17025 in China, or even very specific calibration procedures?

Best regards,
