View Full Version : Free GD&T font for Word and Excel
deuce 27th May 2004, 01:14 PM Does anyone know where I can get a free GD&T font for Word and Excel?? I have the one from AIAG that comes with the electronic APQP package but it doesn't show up very well when you print it for some reason. Even when I bold it, it doesn't show up like the rest of my printed page. Any help would be appreciated.

A quick question: does this font set include the "Datum Feature" (ISO) symbol? This particular symbol was changed from the previous GD&T Standard version.
Stijloor 2nd July 2007, 03:37 PM I don't know if I'll be sent up the river for this, but here you are:
How do I integrate these symbols in my document?
I can open the zip file, and what do I do now?
Thanks for your help.

I am not sure what your interpretation of "Datum Feature" (ISO) symbol is? Are speaking of the "triangle" to note a Datum feature? If so, no it is not there. I also noticed no use of the symbol U (similar to M for MMC etc.)
In the link I provided you can download the program under a trial version and see if it fits your needs.
For creating AS9102 form3 and other reports I have found it invaluable!

Simply copy and paste the TTF file into your Fonts folder, this will automatically install the font.
Typical path:
"C:\WINDOWS\FONTS"
Once installed it will be ready to use in most applications. Here is an Excel application example that is typical to most applications.
In Excel, find the Font menu in the upper menus of Excel menu bars. From the menu you select the appropriate font, in this case "gdt_____.ttf"
You will have to get used to remembering Key codes to use the font.
Such as, example, pressing the following keys while holding down the "ALT" key will produce this character "Ø".
ALT 0 2 1 6
(Spaces are for clarity only).
In the program I suggested ($50.00) you select the desired character from a menu with a simple mouse click. Installing the IMS.TTF font is the same as above.

Note that if the font is just copied into the fonts folder you might have to reboot before programs will "see" it, because fonts are enumerated at boot time (which is why getting rid of some fonts can speed up the boot process if you have a lot of them). Also, you can just open Character Map and select/paste from there. In Win XP, it's Start/AllPrograms/Accessories/System Tools/Character Map. Or even simpler, Start/Run and then charmap. No $50 required. :D

FishOKTMB 3rd June 2008, 04:03 PM Thanks Rob, I think. I have downloaded the .zip file to my desktop and then attempted to save it to C:\Windows\Fonts. However I get an error message because it is still zipped or the file format is incorrect. How do you unzip the file, doesn't XP automatically unzip. Has anyone else had this problem?

Got it Thanks very much!!!!!
Micronus 17th June 2008, 10:48 PM Attached is a font I created using ASME-Y14.5-1994 format. It is 100% public domain and can be copied and used in any way you like as long as the copyright notice in the font remains. You can add frames around Letters by following each with a "_" character. To add frames to numbers and punctuation, follow each character with a ”!”.
Use "[" to start boxed dimensions and end with "]". eg for "|12|" use "[1!2!]"
Use "{" to start feature control frames and end with "]". eg to print a feature control frame for “PROFILE 0.2 |A|B(m)|C|” use “{k_|0!.!2!|A_|B_m_|C_|”
This uses some unusual metrics to add the frames and I don’t know if it will work on macs and in all windows applications. It works in all the windows programs I have tested.
This font covers most of the ASME-14.5M items. I will post updates when and if they become available.

Micronus 4th July 2008, 07:56 PM Here is my first update to the Y14.5M.ttf font. I have attached a couple zip file of the font and a program that creates feature control frames and outputs them as either a bitmap or the character string. The bitmaps are nice because you don't need the font installed on other computers that view the files. If you only want the font it is in the FontOnly.zip file.
Again this is public domain with no usage restrictions. Please copy it and use it however and where ever you like. If I make any substantial updates, I'll upload them to this thread in the future.
If you find any bugs, or would like changes, you can post comments here and I might make the changes.
I hope you find this useful.

outdrsman 23rd September 2008, 12:25 PM Micronus,
I have downloaded the font from the website mentioned and everything seems to work ok except for the conical taper symbol won't appear in my excel spreadsheet. It doesn't matter where I try to put it. Also, the apostrophe doesn't appear either. Does anyone know hat is going on here?
thanks
outdrsman 24th September 2008, 09:31 AM I accidentally found the answer I was looking for. The conical taper symbol is only visible when you use 2 apostrophes. The chart only has one shown but that doesn't show any symbol at all.
I just thought that maybe someone else could benefit from my discovery.
iQAmean 2nd October 2008, 08:00 PM Bravo! THANK YOU !
Dave.C 13th March 2009, 12:02 PM You don't need this extra font...
In any standard font using any microsoft program the following works...like in here IE7...
Alt+0176 gives degrees °
Alt+0177 gives plus minus sign ±
Alt+0178 gives squared ²
Alt+0216 gives diameter Ø
Experiment with different codes or simply look them up in character map... Delta, Sigma.. just about anything you want is there.

The Character Map is a handy thing when you only need one or a few characters, but it's a PITA for anything more than that. You can't make feature control frames, or things like runout symbols without dedicated GD&T font.
BTW, to access Character Map in XP, it's Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->System Tools-->Character Map
outdrsman 13th March 2009, 01:07 PM Thanks everyone,
I am using the Y14.5M font from fontspace.com and it handles most everything I needed so far.:D

Thanks! The author of that font says this in his copyright notice:
This font is public domain freeware - copying & redistributing it is encouraged.
You may use it in what ever personal or commercial way you would like.
So I'm attaching the file here, so others can easily access it. The zip file includes the font file itself plus the copyright/instructions file. Look at the instructions before trying to use the font, as there's a bit of clunkiness to it.
bigguy136 13th March 2009, 02:07 PM I thank everyone for your help. I've tried a few of the downloads and I haven't found the answer to this: If I create an inspection report in word, can I send the word doc to someone else that doesn't have the font?
Is there a program that will? Is my only option to embed a bmp?
Thanks again, BG

In MSOffice programs there is an option to "embed" Truetype fonts in the document. I'm using Word 2002, but the method is similar in other versions. It's Tools-->Options, then open the "Save" tab. Embedding the font in the document will increase the file size somewhat. You can use the option "Embed Characters in Use Only" which will, as the prompt suggests, embed only the characters in the font that you've used and not the whole font.
JaxQC 20th April 2009, 11:41 AM The Y14.5M is nice but is there also one that addresses surface finish symbols? Thanks.
iQAmean 20th April 2009, 12:56 PM If you mean the square root symbol(SR sym) -
** in ms office and word - select "insert" in the top menu section, then select "symbols". (shorcut keys: alt + I, then S)
When the symbols box appears, scroll down the symbols to mathematical operators (almost all the way down). You will find the SR sym. Click on the SR sym then hit the "enter" key twice.
This will input the symbol onto your working page.
The SR sym should be in the 'frequently used symbols' box and you don't have to search for it anymore.
hope it helped..

I don't know of anything free that includes surface finish symbols, but for US$59 you can get the Cybermetrics GD&T Font (http://iigdt.com/Products/ProdDetails/GDT_Font.htm) that has them (in addition to GD&T symbols).

JaxQC 6th July 2009, 01:39 PM Thanks Sorin, the Y14 font is the that I’ve ended up using for now. The problem is that most of the ones out there appear to have been made with a specific customer in mind. This one is lacking a couple items that my commodity uses.
Lacking symbols for…
Surface finish / texture (elongated square root symbol)
Co-sink (“v”)
Depth (horizontal line with down arrow) This one had it but others I looked at do not.
Machined surface (closed checkmark)
Between designation (double end arrow)
CenterLine / symmetrical @ cnt’r line (capital C overlaid on capital L)
JIS type texture callouts (upside down triangles, 1 thru 4)
The ability to properly show Stacked GD&T criteria
It’ll do for the time being and if nothing else to show the IT guys that this kind of stuff is indeed already out there rather than having to re-invent the wheel.

I made a post in another thread (I think) that you can do your own symbols/fonts (to a font that exist in Windows) by using Windows Own Editor: Start - Run - and now type in the box: eudcedit
It's a pretty good editor.....
