G'day all...

Just something to throw out there - if you were a twentysomething with an engineering background and three years' work experience (about half in quality) working in the quality field, which magazines would you be reading? I was getting some mags under a former employee's subscription for a while (the favourite of which was Quality Progress - "Mr. Pareto-Head" was pretty funny!) but they never got renewed after she left.

Any suggestions???

Quality Progress is the ASQ magazine for members, if you join ASQ you will get it, and is also on line for members. Quality Digest is free if you sign up for a subscription, and is also on line.
There are probably others out there that Covers may reccommend

"Quality" is another. That and "Quality Digest" are the 2 biggies.

Of course, if that engineer was not in the USA and did not read, write or speak English, he or she would look to something else emanating from their own country/ in their mother tongue. (We must remember the Cove is an International forum in which people of many nationalites gather, for them, though QP and QD and Q are eminently admirable mags, they are probably second or third language mags.)

But, assuming that is not the case, in Britain one would want to read Quality World, the house mag of the IQA. And, if the enginer is aspiring to higher management positions, not in "Quality", a different vista beckons. For that, The Economist and Business Week are essential and perhaps Fortune and HBR.

IMO you cannot read enough nowadays if you want to keep up with events, developments and global competition. And if you want to get ahead let alone retain your market worth.

At the very least, you should explore the list of magazines and make your own decision. The list includes magazines for hobbyists as well, so it's not strictrly business. The goal, of course, for the magazines is to have a targeted demographic for their advertisers to get the biggest bang for the buck. The downside is they ask a lot of information about you for the demographic study they deliver to the advertiser, but I'm pretty sure they don't give the details to the advertisers, only the aggregate statistical data.

Another point I make (but not well) in the post is that these magazines are excellent targets for authors looking to have articles published as a boost to their job or just their ego.

The quality mags already mentioned are good, the Cove Forums for sure. I'd also suggest reading trade mags for the business you are in and maybe something for generic businesses like Inc. or Fast Company or WSJ.
