View Full Version : Interlaboratory Comparisons - I am using RP-15 from NCSL
Jerry Eldred 4th December 1999, 01:17 AM I'm the new kid on the block here. I have been in Metrology for 22 years. After about an 18 month hyatus (sp?), due wanting to keep working (so I had to do other duties), I am i n process of moving back into the world of calibration.
I am about to embark on a couple of projects. One of these is creating an Interlaboratory program for my company. I am using RP-15 from NCSL.
Anyone here done this sort of thing that may have some sage advice/comments on this above what is to be found in RP-15.
Marc 8th December 1999, 08:11 PM I don't know if there are many (any?) 'real' calibration professionals here, although I more than welcome them. I personally can't help. But - I do want to take a minute to ask you if you are on the listserve Greg Gogates moderates - e-mail him at: iso25@fasor.com
It's a great resource for professionals!
Marc 1st February 2005, 08:19 AM Blast from the Past - This dates when Jerry found the Cove! It's nice that these days we do have calibration professinals here regularly.
Hershal 1st February 2005, 10:59 AM Jerry,
ILC is a key component of accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025, along with proficiency testing (PT), so there SHOULD be a bunch of us that are familiar with PT/ILC.
Using RP-15 is a good start. You may find it beneficial to discuss some approaches with PT providers such as NAPT or Quametic.
NAPT: http://www.proficiency.org (talk to Chuck Ellis)
I don't have Quametic's web address handy. Once you get in touch with them, talk to Jeff Gust.
Both organizations can atilor an approach to help you with your efforts, from managing the whole thing to just doing the number crunching and reports.
Marc, is the Gogates listserve still around? Wow! I thought it was long since gone.

Hershal 1st February 2005, 11:00 AM Oops! Just checked the dates...... :o
Ken K 1st February 2005, 01:00 PM All is not lost Hershal...I have a question :bigwave:
Our PT/ILC needs to conform to ISO Guide 43: Part 1 and 2.
Is RP-15 similar? Is it still active? Is a copy available somewhere?
OK.......three questions :o
Marc 1st February 2005, 02:41 PM Marc, is the Gogates listserve still around? Wow! I thought it was long since gone.I think the Gogates listserve is long gone.
I 'resurrected' this thread as much for historical reasons as anything. I was reading through old threads and it reminded me of how long Jerry has been around the Cove. He still stops by, but isn't very active here these days. If you look back through some of the old posts, Jerry spent quite a bit of time in the forums and was, for quite a while, the 'resident metrologist'. This thread was a very early post by Jerry.
Hershal 2nd February 2005, 10:35 AM Ken,
The RP-15 that I have is an older version, so it may not be updated to match the newer version of Guide 43. RP-15 is a good guide, but Guide 43 and ILAC G-13 are better.
Just a note, since you are in a test lab environment (I peeked at public profile), your report will use the Z score approach, rather than the En score approach.
Mind if I ask what your PT/ILC is for?
Hershal
Ken K 2nd February 2005, 01:26 PM Hershal,
Thanks for the reply. We calculate Z-scores and Percent Difference.
So far we have run PT/ILC for tensile properties, tear strength, weight, specific gravity and thickness on carpeted and non-carpeted flooring materials.
Hershal 2nd February 2005, 04:47 PM We should talk off-line, as we have quite a number of test labs that may benefit from some collaboration on PT/ILC. We participate in APLAC ones of course, but are always looking to increase the availability for the labs.

Ken K 7th February 2005, 02:46 PM Our lab had it's Surveillance II audit this past Thursday and Friday. One of the author's of 17025 was our auditor. As you can imagine, it was a very thorough, yet enjoyable experience.
Although our accredited tests use ASTM, ISO, SAE and GM methods, we will be required to estimate uncertainty. Actually, we have already been doing that, but we did not have a precedure in place.
Our lab has been using control charts for a number of years and our auditor suggested we continue to do so but modify them somewhat to take uncertainty into account.
We will be using the "A2LA Guide for the Estimation of Measurement Uncertainty in Testing" as a guide and will be plotting action and warning limits. For any of you looking for a copy, it can be found on their websight. It's a very understandable guide and I recommend it to anyone having problems with GUM.
Just to toot our own horn....0 non-conformances were written during our audit. :agree1:
Hershal 8th February 2005, 10:24 AM WAY TO GO on the 0 findings!!! :applause: :agree1:
The A2LA guide is one of several that are much easier than GUM to understand. Others include the ones from UKAS and NABL (India).

Graeme 8th February 2005, 10:43 AM I think the Gogates listserve is long gone.
Actually, it's not. the signup instructions are at
http://www.fasor.com/iso25/listserv.html
However, since I discovered The Cove I don't really lurk there much any more. And at least some of the participants in that list can be found here as well ...
Randy Stewart 8th February 2005, 11:53 AM :applause: Congrats Ken,
We received our accreditation last October, we had 4 minors. We also had an author of 17025 as an auditor - it was interesting to say the least.
Precision 1st August 2005, 12:38 PM Hi, my name is Mary Kelly and I just registered last night. I am in the process of applying for A2LA and also need RP-15 and ISO guide 43. Can you download the guides. I live in San Juan Capistrano. I worked @ Endevco for 26 yrs as a process owner of the Calibration Lab, I quit last August and started my own calibration services. Is there anyway that we can chat?
Hershal 1st August 2005, 02:59 PM Precision,
The RPs are available from NCSLI. I believe they can be downloaded.
http://www.ncsli.org
ISO Guides 43-1 and -2 are most easily obtained from ISO, oras an alternative you can use the proficiency test documents from APLAC, as all five recognized accrediting bodies use them. You would likely be most interested in PT001.
http://www.aplac.org
If you have already applied to an AB, check with them prior to performing PT/ILC, as they may have something already in the works, or have preferred PT providers they will refer you to.
If you have not yet applied, then talk to all five recognized ABs prior to applying to any one, for their policies on all points needed for accreditation. The five are IAS, A2LA, NVLAP, L-A-B, and SCC/CLAS.
Hope this helps.
