Thanks Claes.
It's so difficult for a non-writer to start scribbling anything because there are so many things or issues. Yet, one just do not know what to scribble and where to start.
For a start I'll name this Harry's Corner - where I can rant, scribble and give my two cents about issues which could be dear to me but which others may not be interested, issues not related to quality or those that I had a strong opinion about. And yes, I will abide by the rules and regulations here (TOS - terms of service)Posted 26th May 2008 at 11:35 PM by harry

One issue dear to my heart is about 'New Users'. Many just plunged in without having a 'feel' of the 'environment' or 'group behavior' and when they start posting, they may attract negative comments or impressions at times. There is not point trying to pin point who's right and who's wrong. To avoid it and to get maximum benefit out of participation, one needs to observe some forum good practices or etiquette.
One recent post - Can somebody give me a copy of XX12 standard. It took several post and inquiry over a few days before it was establish that XX12 standard is from the 'Butterfly' Company. Till today, the OP had yet to come back with the 'complete title of the standard' despite a Cover volunteering to help sourced for it if this detail is provided.
It boils down to communication and like what we practiced for purchase information - provide enough details.
Quote:If you are asking for information or help, provide enough details such as:
1. What do you want
2. What is it about
3. Detail title or name of document/description
4. Relevant code, year if applicable
5. Company producing it or publisherPosted 27th May 2008 at 12:50 AM by harry

About new visitors... Yes, it is frustrating, but as the internet continues to swell the variety of visitors will continue to change including people whose main interest is in getting 'free' files. But then again, it always has been this way to some degree.
All this becomes more apparent here as the number of visitors increases. I'm sure you check out the monthly visitor statistics that I post. In the future it may be that we will need to bring in extra moderators to help.
It takes a lot to be a moderator here these days. I appreciate all the help with the site, Harry!Posted 28th June 2008 at 05:11 PM by Marc

Marc, thanks for dropping by and sharing some of your thoughts.
In two weeks time, I will be celebrating my first anniversary as a moderator here and I want to let you know that I had enjoyed every minute of it. I want to thank you for the example you set and it had enabled newbies like me to quickly settled down here and play a useful part.
I think we need to thank all our 'Covers' for helping to make this a very 'civil' site and that had made the life of moderators very much easier.
With regards to 'New' users, I hope that we can find a way to help them to quickly settle down and adapt to the way 'the Cove' operates or our culture here. I hope to turn this small corner into a 'dos' and 'don't' section to augment the 'FAQ' thread. OK, I need to start working on it and not just thinking and talking.Posted 28th June 2008 at 10:40 PM by harry

Well, my two cents (actually worth about 0.0125 now) is that being on this site for many many years (with a big absence in the middle years) I think without a doubt it's the best one stop shopping for input, ideas, common issues and generally good conversations with people from all over the world.
Marc and the moderators have done a great job and it's good to reconnect with all of you after so long.
Now on to ranting and venting: there really is no one much better at it than me (JMHO) and I would love to rant and vent on all of you as well; but being that this is Harry's corner of the world here I will save it for my own blogosphere.
Have at it Harry - I can't wait to read what you write...
On the new user front - might I suggest a new thread for this; maybe a fresh start with the older one being archived - or maybe just closed. Just a thought but you could capture the newest of the new with a new post explaining what the cove is all about. Just like the old one but maybe just new....(kind-of a little rant there but you get the point).Posted 27th October 2008 at 01:07 PM by Tom W
