Open Space meetings -- another great tool for collaboration

Have you ever been to a conference and came back thinking that your best interactions were at the coffee breaks and meals where you met surprisingly interesting folks at random?

Industry or interest group symposia typically involve sessions on subjects chosen by the organizers and delivered by knowledgeable presenters to a passive audience. The audience may have 5 to 15 minutes to lob questions at the end, and, of course, also has a chance to mingle informally at coffee breaks and...

Systems Thinking Exercise

Posted 20th June 2009 at 11:00 AM by bobdoering

One of the examples I use when training in systems thinking, and the concept of the effect of interrelationships is this simple exercise:

Here is the scenario:

You are standing in front of the sink in your bathroom at home. You have a tissue that you wish to discard. You have a decision: You can either throw it into the wastebasket or flush it down the toilet.

What can you write down about this decision? It seems like a very benign choice, and most...

Aren't the Coves Great?

Posted 28th July 2008 at 03:09 PM by Dvora (Dvora's Musings on Quality)

I just wrote this privately to someone, but I just want to put this in my blog for everyone else....

In this day and age where so much is centered around a "what's in it for me" mentality, it is simply awesome to find a resource like the Elsmar Coves. I am stunned by the number of professionals who are willing to give of their invaluable time and knowledge to help those of us still learning the ropes.

If I thank you individually, I will forget...

What Keeps Us from Learning?

Thinking about some of the things in my first blog, about learning to use the tools we use...

I think another issue we all must face - whatever our primary skill - is what interferes with learning. We know people get frustrated with things like MS Word... and the tools are out there to learn, but many simply do not learn. Why?

I can only think of my own experience, what keeps me from learning, and what I've observed when I've trained others.

A biggy...

Shouldn't We Learn to USE the Tools We Work With?

Posted 15th July 2008 at 06:03 PM by Dvora (Dvora's Musings on Quality)
OK, this one is my pet peeve.

If someone is going to work with a certain tool, shouldn't they invest time to learn to use it and get the most out of it?

That is why I like the Coves. I am now working on quality documentation. As I gain an understanding of just what a QMS is and how it can impact a company, I want to get as much information as possible to provide the best quality documents possible to my client.

Quality people know all about their tools:...
