Re: ISO 9001:2015 - Is control possible with Excel adaptable measurement sheets?

Make yourself an XL spreadsheet with calculation cells, and referenced cells.

Protect everything except for the referenced cells (using the protection tab).

Password protect the sheet.

Then have someone else open the sheet, put data into the referenced cells (like you would doing data entry).

Then drag that entered data from one referenced cell to another...the formula will change, even though the calculation is supposedly behind the password protection...

If I can find this thread tomorrow, I'll post an example sheet...there's one on here from one of my posts a few years ago...

Re: ISO 9001:2015 - Is control possible with Excel adaptable measurement sheets?

Here is a simple demo sheet showing the drag and drop flaw.

Any questions (or especially any solutions), please post.

This was made in Excel 2016 on a Windows 10 platform. I've seen this issue as far back as Windows 98 (not sure which XL level back then).

I cannot duplicate your issue. However, I am using Office 365 Excel, so they may have fixed the issue.

Re: ISO 9001:2015 - Is control possible with Excel adaptable measurement sheets?

When I drag the number "2" from D5 down to E10: (Not copy/paste...but drag and drop)

The total in G5 remains "10" since the formula has changed.
Also, the cell G10 now shows "#REF!" since I dropped a cell reference in place of one of the formula components.

You see something different?

Got it. You are grabbing it on an edge with the 4-way arrow, not with the + sign in the lower right corner. That does duplicate your issue.

This work-around (uncheck the box in red) prevents the issue. Unfortunately, it does not travel with the file, but stays with the specific copy of Excel. In other words, I can configure my copy of Excel to prevent it, but if I send the file to you, you can still drag and drop unless you configure your copy of Excel in the same way.

I did find the attached VBA code to do the same. Not being a macro/VBA expert, I don't know if you can embed this in a specific file to turn it off when the file is opened, and turn it back on when the file is closed.

I also found this that might work for you.

This site was more helpful.

I have it working for me. I added VBA script, which forced it to be a macro enabled file type. Test it out and let me know.

Re: ISO 9001:2015 - Is control possible with Excel adaptable measurement sheets?

Did not enable macros (never worked anywhere that allowed it...including here in my company)...but without enabling the macro, it looks like it prevents the drag in the first place.
Unfortunately, it also prohibits copy/cut/paste.

I'll try it out on a different non-net computer after I do a full backup...nothing personal, but what are security measures for if the boss ignores them...

Had a sever infected once...55 people sitting on their butts for a week, and three weeks of work lost (worm got the backups too...had to rewind to start of month backup).
Funny, I stepped into Director of IT role within a year after that

All the same, I appreciate the potential work-around. Consider posting it to the downloads section on here.
