R&R on Eddy Current Inspection?

hi, I am a producer of engine pistons and use eddy current to examine the machined surface. Now my customer wants us to run some R&R on eddy current. Does anybody have this kind of info or experiences related?

It is a attribute gage, I think, so you have two choices good or bad. So you will have to check 50 parts with a known sample of bad parts mixed in and see if it finds'em.

Welcome to The Cove.

Normally eddy-current isn't a gage R&R instrument for us. We don't calibrate it or use MSA in the same way as other equipment. Each time we do a set-up we "train" the system. For example when verifying coating we run "green" and finished samples to train the system. When looking for surface cracks we run known defects to establish the parameters. We use our "Micro-View" which is calibrated to an NIST standard to determine base measurements.

I would suppose we could do an attribute R&R by running rabbits through the system with a yes/no result but once the system is trained for that run it wouldn't seem to make much sense.

Would your customer accept a reliability study instead of an R&R? The end result should give them the same confidence that the system is accurate in doing the inspection.

What Dave said. I was one of our certified (la ti da) eddy current technicians at my last job. We never did R&Rs, and we were QS (ok, so it was a while back:tg:) certified. There was never a problem with no R&Rs, and believe me, we R&Rd a lot of devices.

Thank you guys, although some of you made me confused.
Actually, my customer also recommended attribute gage r&r analyses on each channel of ec system for both the master product with artificial defects and real products.
