Airfix have been a long established UK based model maker - from back in the 50's and 60's when I built them. Like a lot of companies in the model industry, they've been transformed by manufacturing technology and costs have been held down by being made in China (where else??)

If you look at the bottom of their website they are part of a group of model makers which are all at the middle to top of their industry. Hornby and Corgi make pretty reasonable models, as are Scalextric. Not the highest detail of very expensive models, the Tamiyas for example - but higher than 'toys', if you understand my meaning.

They can be found in US specialist model stores.
