Forgive my ignorance on this but as an Englishman I don't know what Yellow Jackets are - they sound mean and nasty. Are they some kind of wasp or hornet?

Yes, they are a very mean-tempered wasp, or is that a hornet. Often they build nests in the ground. They're called yellow jackets because they are yellow and black striped. They look similar to and are often mixed up as paper wasps.

Thanks for the clarification Dave - our wasps mostly build nests in buildings such as in the loft space in a house but they too can build in the ground.

Looks like what we would call a 'common wasp'. Our hornets look the same but bigger!

Yeah! But that's the California variety. Brad has assured us the Texas ones are about twice that size (if you are viewing on a 25 inch monitor, otherwise, scale accordingly.  )
