Is ISO 50001 Certification useful for an Auto Components Manufacturer?
Hi Friends, after a long time, I am initiating a new thread
We are 16949/14001/27001 certified company. Now I am going to launch the project for 50001 certification in my company. Please give me your valuable feedback as this is a new standard. Would it be useful for the company? We are auto componants manufacturers for all major OEMs in India & abroad.
Thanx in advance for your feedback

I think the introduction part of ISO 9001:2008, 0.1 General states it very well: The adoption of a QMS should be a strategic decision of the organization.
The same applies to any other certification.

Hi,
I have recently obtained a qualification for Energy System auditor and I have followed some course on this subject of ISO 50001.
It could be usefull as new certification of the company system pointing at saving of energy, very important aspect. This certification is ok independently from the business. It is very generic and looks like ISO 14001 topics.
Good luck

Re: Is ISO 50001 Certification useful for an Auto Components Manufacturer?
Hello Sushil,
Implementing energy management system is definitely beneficial but the benefits of certification are for now limited for suppliers as this certification is not a mandatory requirement from the OEMs. Having said that this certification will keep you ahead of your competitors and organizations looking for sustainability will definitely appreciate it.
My recommendation would be to realize the economic benefits from implementing and afterwards you may go for certification as well.
Best of luck

Would "Certification" be useful? This could be argued 'till the cows come home
Would 50001 be useful? You betcha (mainly for helping save money, and then for helping with environmental performance improvement as a supporting element of your 14001 based program)

Re: Is ISO 50001 Certification useful for an Auto Components Manufacturer?
Sushil - I would say it is definitely useful. Unlike ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, the new ISO for Energy Management Systems (EnMS) is more data driven, and results are manifested on the bottom line. A robust EnMS allows you to identify many non-capital energy saving projects that your typical energy audit doesn't address, as well as more conventional opportunities in equipment replacement and upgrades.
Finally, an ISO 50001 system ensures 'persistence' of the continuous energy improvement effort over time and through personnel changes. Energy becomes an organizational concern, not just the concern of one or two enthusiastic individuals.
So, the short answer is, yes, ISO 50001 is useful for an auto components manufacturer.

I agree with Paul.
Certification moves the subject up the management ladder. It will not be the quest of a few lone "Don Quichotte", but will become a management approved crusade.
(should be anyway, like quality, right )
