Mutual Defense Treaty Review

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama assured President Aquino of the US government’s support for Philippine efforts to build a minimum credible defense posture.
We can't stop there. We have to ask when, where, how and, if we're feeling rather cocky, how much?

The United States does not want to take sides in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) territorial disputes. If that is so, the United States can play "third party auditor" and keep the contending parties in the West Philippine Sea disputes from getting into direct confrontations.

There must be a performance audit of the Philippines' security agreements with the United States and other countries to see whether these are doing the country any good amid threats posed by China's increasing aggressiveness in the West Philippine Sea.

If we can't get anything from these agreements, why should we still have these agreements?

Good question, especially if there isn't any real return on the investment.

You explain why they still need to be in place.

All I know is that we have the Mutual Defense Treaty and we have the Visiting Forces Agreement. That's why it's better to have a performance review of the Philippines' bilateral agreements with other countries to see whether these are doing the country any good.

Since it is in place, I think Philippines must be getting just a fraction of the US military aid to Pakistan. And yet it was in Pakistan that al-Qaida supremo Osama bin Laden had been hiding for more than a decade until the United States traced him there last year and killed him.

It's better to scrap defense treaty if, for example, US won't help Philippines in case attacked by China.

Re: Mutual Defense Treaty Review

I believe that the US has demonstrated, with blood, its commitment to the Phillipines and the Phillipino people....1st with Spain and then with the Japanese. In WW2 the Phillipines could have been easily bypassed in favor of Formosa, but it wasn't.

Just because we aren't there in force doesn't mean we aren't there. We we permanently ordered out and other that some troops that have been training, or some that have been there because of Extremeist activities, we have stay out. Y'all didn't want us, so we bowed out according to your wishes.
