Please Help! Validating the AOI process (Automated Optical Inspection)

I work for an electronics contract manufacturer who recently purchased an Automated Optical Inspection machine to put in line with our SMT line. We are ISO9001:2000 registered. Question: How do I go about validating the AOI process?

Are you familiar with Measurement System Analysis (MSA)?

You may want to do a search on "Attribute Gage R&R"
Look further for: "Automated Gaging Equipment Gage R&R."

Some of my Fellow Covers that are specialists in this will chime in soon.

Re: Automated Optical Inspection

Has anyone here validated an AOI process (Automated Optical Inspection)?

Re: Validating the AOI process (Automated Optical Inspection)

Generate test boards with known (manufactured) defects, then tune the machine to identify the defects - use IPC-A-610 as a guideline basically your machine should agree with an inspector

Calibrate regularly against your test boards, maintaining the boards in a vacuum sealed ESD bag with a sachet of dessicant to preserve the solder joints whenever they are not in use.

Taking this to the Nth degree, you could consider having a master board for each type of PCB you manufacture, which can be run through as a first and last validation test - if you are using expensive multilayers with blind/buried vias etc, then talk your PCB manufacturer they should be able to provide you with a simple non-functional board which can be used for this purpose - for expensive IC's, you can likewise obtain dummy components for placement testing which can be used for the AOI validation.
Basically, determine your validation critera, then cut your cloth to suit.

Also bear in mind that AOI equipment suppliers should be providing some sort of calibration boards which can be used, but those I have seem tend to be pretty basic - what you use should ideally be representative of your product.

QCMan,

Has your issue with AOI been resolved?

If not, please let us know.

Question Re: Validating the AOI process (Automated Optical Inspection)

Can the AOI be calibrated by 3rd party or is it an internal calibration feature that the machine program comes with?

Re: Validating the AOI process (Automated Optical Inspection)

Depends on your machine, we have Orbotech and upon purchase it was supplied with a calibration kit

QC Man,In addition, you should check the performance by periodical time, as far I knew we did by monthly but its depend on the performance on your machine.
