Call it Calibration, but my interest is of "error" in the Gage Block because I use it to make far more important decision than I do with a Steel rule.

You could smooth off a block that had expanded.

Steel rules can be adjusted. I just wouldn't want to.

I don't call it calibration, the VIM does -

calibration:
operation that, under specified conditions, in a first
step, establishes a relation between the quantity
values with measurement uncertainties provided
by measurement standards and corresponding
indications with associated measurement uncertainties
and, in a second step, uses this information
to establish a relation for obtaining a measurement
result from an indication

Nothing in the definition about adjustment.

dwperron is correct. In the industry, adjustment beyond incidental is typically considered repair, not calibration. Often also billed at a different rate. Uncertainty is considered a part of calibration however.

Feeling silly today:

Verification: What you need in order to know your gauge is good to go

Calibration: What you call it when talking to a customer or auditor

Repair: What you call it when you submit the bill to accounting to pay for it

Excelent points. Trouble is, this is a common misunderstanding with a large number of people.
