Thank You! Looking for a Powder Coating Process Instruction

I have recently been handed all suppliers that apply powder coating on our steel parts. These suppliers do not have a documented powder process so I am coming to the group with hopes that someone can submit a process work instruction that touches on the fundamentals of powder coating which may include what to check on a daily / weekly basis. These fundamentals may include metal preparation, control of FOD, powder storage / application process and powder curing.

One week ago I spent a half day with the field tech with Sherwin Williams at the location of one of my suppliers. This was very helpful and through that I now realize that some of my suppliers are not following the powder coating fundamentals. Sherwin Williams was able to supply me a 112 page powder coating manual but no process instruction.

Thank you in advance for considering my request.

Re: Looking for a Powder Coating Process Instruction

The discipline of powder coating can be very complicated. If I were you I would start in steps. The first step would be oven calibration and then verification of the temperature used by the supplier. I have found this to be the area that causes the most problems. The second area I would cover is cleaning & prep. You could get with your Sherwin Williams supplier for guide lines on this. If you get these two major areas under control you will eliminate the vast majority of your problems and then you can move on to items like employee training and the shelf life and storage of the powders.

Re: Looking for a Powder Coating Process Instruction

Ask how, ask now, ask Sherwin Williams! (sorry, I just had to)

It has been a while since I have worked with powder coatings (i used to inspect coatings for pieces going to construction work) but silentrunning has the right idea with going to Sherwin Williams.

I was involved in a presentation by a coating supplier and that was the best knowledge I gained.

Push Sherwin Williams to do a little more than hand you a 113 page book.
