Statistical techniques used should be appropriate to the application. I would be asking who decided to use which type of chart for each process and characteristic and why.

Is the data normal? There are many threads on the cove covering non normal data such as machining processes and how it should be handled differently.

Do the people using the charts understand them and know how and when to react?

When processes are not capable to the required level, what action plans are in place to contain non conforming product and improve the process?

How are statistics used in problem solving and in other areas of the business?

The most important factors to consider are use of the appropriate tools, competence of people using statistics and action on what the statistics tell you.

The basic requirement of the standard that need auditing internally is :

8.1.2 Knowledge of basic statistical concepts
Basic statistical concepts, such as variation, control (stability), process capability and over-adjustment shall be understood and utilized throughout the organization.

As prototyper said in my paraphrase- if you see use of statistics, ensure that it is used properly, by people who understand and is monitored for improvement

Remember SPC is only a very small aspect of the statistical requirements of the standard

Doesn't the internal auditor have to be competent to know how to audit the scope/criteria? If the answer is yes, it's not sufficient to simply get a list of things to know or question....you have to know what you're looking at - what if the distribution is not normal, what then? How should people use the charts and how should they react?

Internal auditors - if they are going to be effective - also need to understand the technology, terminology, tools and techniques they are going to audit!

Typically, some of the old school SPC chart shop floor verifications are still good: Are the data points taken at the appropriate frequency, are important process changes noted, are out of control points identified and the corrective action noted, does the operator know the signs of out of control conditions, does the SPC instructions match the control plan, are the dots connected, is the math correct?
