ASTM B633 Zinc Plating Specification - Transportation of parts by boat to China

R. Webb

I am not a chemist so can anyone help. I received the following question from my supervisor. It would be on a cold rolled sheet metal part. Packing would be wrapped in foam in a dowble walled cardboard box.

"Dick,
Can you see if this zinc plating spec we use for XXXXXX is sufficient to prevent corrosion on parts going by boat to China?
Thanks,
XXXX"

THe plating spec is,

" ASTM B633, .0002 in. min., Type II Passivation; 96 HR Salt Spray Minimum and 5 Milliohms per square inch electrical resistance maximum. Color shall be clear to irridescent. All surfaces significang. Trivalent chromium based bath chemistries shall be used."

Will the parts get to China okay?

I can't really say much specific here as it's not my filed of expertise, but in my past life I saw a lot of parts that were sent by boat or train (long trips) coated to ensure no rust or other surface degradation occurred.

Hopefully someone here with more recent and specific experience will help out in this thread.
