I have seen it done without any particular problems. In essence, a CNC machine with a measuring probe attached becomes a CMM, and as long as the accuracy is sufficient, I see no problem with it. Anyone else?
A key to accurate measurement is that the gage and the part need to be clean. Do do not want to measure chips, coolant, etc. If this can be assured, then you have a good chance of good measurement. Of course, you have a tool to determine the adequacy of such a measuring system - do a Gage R & R (or at least a gage R).
