NHTSA calls for nationwide Takata airbag recall

Airbag company accused of cover-up... :mg:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Tuesday said the limited recall of faulty Takata airbags in hot, humid climates is insufficient, citing new accident data outside those regions, and called for a broader, nationwide recall.

“We feel we had to act in the interests of safety,” said NHTSA Deputy Administrator David Friedman, who told reporters that Takata so far is unwilling to comply. The agency warned Takata and five vehicle manufacturers that if they don’t quickly agree to the broader recall, NHTSA will use its own powers to order one.

Data shows that the inflator in some Takata airbags can rupture, spraying metal fragments into the driver or passenger. The defect has been linked to at least four deaths in the U.S.

I just watched an NPR news show - There are still hundreds of thousands of used cars with defective Takata airbags being sold without the dealer telling the buyer. They said people can check by using Carfax and entering their VIN number.
