ISO 14001, the world’s most popular standard for environmental management, is currently being reviewed by WG5/SC1/TC207.

The standard is being updated from an environmental management perspective but will also incorporate ISO’s High Level Structure, which defines a common structure for management systems standards.

The key components of the new standard are set to be:

A need to take into account the external and internal context of the organisation
A need to use risk-based thinking to consider the context and requirements of all interested parties
A need to apply a life cycle perspective when identifying risks
A need to align the management of environment to the strategic planning of the organisation

Following an overwhelmingly positive vote, Committee Draft 2 (CD2) will be moved to Draft International Standard (DIS) status. Further consultation will now take place with comments on the DIS being reviewed in two stages; firstly at a meeting in Padova, Italy, and then, at a meeting in Panama City, Panama.

The output from these meetings will be processed by ISO, circulated for further comments and then balloted in the second half of this year.

If the voting is positive, a final draft will be produced in early 2015 and circulated once more, for members to vote. If the second round of voting is also successful, then the new standard should be published by the end of 2015.
