I would start with the auditor exam; it is easier and the CQE contains some questions on auditing that you would then be prepared for.

Lots of people study with the Indiana Quality Council Primers with success, but I don't like them. I don't think they have enough information, and are too cumbersome for the testing classroom desks I have always used. Instead, to prepare for exams I use Quality Audit Handbook by ASQ Press, and Thomas Pyzdek's books from Quality America.

Juran's Quality Control Handbook is considered the default resource for advanced quality engineering principles. Do not try to read that book; instead, do learn to look things up in it; it is an excellent reference.

I, as well as others, believe in taking practice exams. Both Indiana Quality Council and Quality America put out good exam question CDs. I thought Quality America's version was more accurate and repeated fewer questions.

For statistics, my weakest subject, I used Quality Engineering Statstics by Dovich and CQE Quick Reference Notes by Dovich, Nutt and Johnson. When I took the exam, notes in books were allowed. The last book I mentioned had lots of room for notes, which both helped me learn and was a useful exam reference. I would use a maximum of three reference books at exam time.

I hope this helps!

You are very kind to take my advice so seriously, but I hope you will seek alternatives to buying a stack of these books if they are only to take the tests with.

If you are unaccustomed to these big four-hour (or more) exams, the CD Rom of test questions is a good investment in your success. Many people reported passing the exams after studying the Primers but taking practice tests can be a very big help because questions will appear in certain formats, and your time must be efficiently used. Four hours can go by very quickly!

If you want more materials, perhaps they are available at a nearby library. If not, are you a member of ASQ, and if so, does your local chapter have a lending library that contains any of these materials?

Unless you will continue to use the books and CDs as references, it might be better to confine your spending to a short list for information you can't get in other ways.

If you want to save some dollars, many (but not all) of the references Jennifer lists are available in the used book market. For example, I picked up Juran's Quality Control Handbook for about $25/$30 dollars. My typical approach has been to go to google or yahoo and search for "used books". Most of the links on the first page of either are worth checking out - sometimes one seller has access to better prices than another. I've used ABE Books, Powell's and others with satisfaction.

Ditto! One of the great things about the WWW is the access it provides to great source and reference materials, including many that have been out of print for years. I have also had good experience with Abebooks.
