The Contribution System
Update: Because advertising is going OK, I have eliminated the requirement of a minimum post count to enable access to attachments to posts in threads in the 'business' forums. However, Contributions are still needed and appreciated.
Details at: http://Elsmar.com/Forums/showthread.php?t=6641

ORIGINAL THREAD CONTENT:
So far the Google AdSense program is working much better than I expected.
In contrast, the Amazon link has provided zero revenue.
This is not a promise, but if advertising income improves I may change the Contribution system here. This version of vBulletin software has a provision for 'promotions' which can be based upon several factors including number of posts. I may set a 'promotion' level based upon the number of posts and/or Karma a person has. When a person reaches a set threshold, that person will auto-magically be 'promoted' to a new user group which will allow download of post attachments. Once 'promoted', it is a 'permanent' promotion.
Using such a system would keep freeloaders from hogging bandwidth and not contributing anything (for those folks the Contributions system would still be available) while 'rewarding' those who participate.
If you see a Google AdSense advertisement in the sidebar which interests you, visit the advertiser. Comparison shop if you're looking for something. See what options are available! Get some ideas!
I would like the site to be totally free of advertisements and 'fees' as it used to be but as I believe you all know that is not feasible any more. Times have changed.
Comments and suggestions welcome.
I have tentatively set up the following 'Promotion' (see attachment):

Business Model Change
I wanted to take some time to explain the change in the 'business model' here in the forums. Basically, if I can maintain a resonable advertising revenue, it has supplanted the need for user contributions for access to post attachments.
As you all know, I did not allow advertising until 22 December 2003 when I added Google's AdSense and Amazon (so far a no profit link). I added a link to Atul's site gratis because he helps out so much here. I also added links to db's main web sites gratis because db has long supported the forums (including financially) and has had links to the Cove on his sites.
Now that I have a taste of what advertising *can* provide financially, I want to start a reversion to a system which costs the user less if anything. I have retained a minimum standard for now - I set the limit at 20 posts.
How does this affect current Contributors?
Users who Contributed between March 2003 and June 2003 were not put in the software's 'subscription' user set because that was pre- version 3 vBulletin software and the function did not exist at that time. I manually changed those users status in the admin control panel. Everyone who was entered like that will maintain that status permanently. You folks supported me early and I appreciate it. Your status will not change.
Users who contributed after I put vB version 3 beta online: Your account will eventually 'expire' - the software dated the entry and set a timer.

Comments and questions invited.

Contributor's Forums Access
Everyone in the following User Groups can see this forum and has access to post and read threads in this forum: - Admins
- Moderators
- Contributors
- Courtesy Access
- Involvement Access - Posts
However, because of the financial input of those who have Contributed, and those who contribute in the future, I want to be able to provide Contributors with some 'special' files from time to time.
The easiest way for me to do this is through attachments to posts. So - I apologise in advance to others, but only Contributors, Admins and Moderators have access to download attachments to posts from this forum.

Restrictions on Access to Post Attachments Eliminated
Because advertising is going OK, I have eliminated the requirement of a minimum post count to enable access to attachments to posts in threads in the 'business' forums.
I will continue to post 'extras' from time to time which will only be available to Contributors.
