Welding Expert Needed to help us - Square Aluminum bar to be welded
Hello,
I'm new to the cove, thanks for all who are helping others.
I have a problem here if I have a sqaure Aluminum bar to be welded as shown in attached file how many welding joints ?
Should it welded in all corners ?
I know that it depends on load itself, as example if this frame will carry 3 tons
so, how many joints at that case ?
Thanks for help

Hi ZK and welcome to the Cove,
I think your question may exceed our capabilities here. My thoughts are you need a structural engineer to answer your question.
Sorry we couldn't be of more help!

You never know. It has only been less than a day since this was posted. Someone may come along and have something to add. I wouldn't give up yet. By the way, wouldn't you weld it completely around?

ZK,
You may want to address this to AWS. Their website is: http://www.aws.org
They maybe able to address this issue. If you are not in a hurry on this I can maybe look up the requirements in AWS D1.2/D1.2M:2003 "Structural Welding Code - Aluminum" or maybe you could purchase one from the American Welding Society (AWS) from their website.

I showed this to our local welding expert (he has written articles for AWS) and his answer was:
ZK is correct, it depends on what the weld(s) are supposed to do. Typically corners are wrapped to avoid a stress raiser and for the type of weld, fillet, partial or full penetration, it depends on the load. Should get someone who understands the service and can design for that.
