CSA Z1000 OHSMS Standard Finalized

Greetings:

I just wanted to let everyone know that Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the Industrial Accident Preventation Association (IAPA) have finalized their OHSMS standard (CSA Z1000) as of last week (April 7, 06) and expect to have electronic and paper copies available in the next week or two??. It is smiliar to OSHAS 18001 with an increased emphasis on worker participation.

It was developed with equal representation from Business, Labour and Regulators from across Canada. Consistent with ISO 14001, OSHAS 18001, ANSI Z10 and ILO-OSH 2001, it was developed so organzations can "improve its OSH performance to prevent occupational injuries, illnesses and fatalities by ...."

The document contains both the standard and a guidance section (Appendix A) on how OHS can be implemented within an organzation.

It should make for an interesting few years as organizations try to determine which OSH standard is of greater value.

James, thanks for the information. However, I find discouraging to gather more evidence that shows how dysfunctional the Business community is. Twice, they torpedoed initiatives to form an OHSMS Technical Committee under the auspices of ISO. And, now, when OHSAS 18001 is gaining momentum around the World, National Standards such as this one, the American ANSI Z10 and the Australia New Zeland OHSMS Std...keep popping up.
Why couldn't these national bodies rally around the ISO initiative when they had a chance? Why fragment the effort? When there is evidence that International Standards are becoming more mainstream, why can't the OHS business community agree on a common standard?
