Please Help! Suggestions for thread rings and plugs - Old and not used for years

A client purchased a screw machine business and along with it came a cabinet FULL of gages. Most have no calibration sticker. There is literally every size, of thread ring and thread plug gage, in additional to some pin gages.

So there is probably $1000's of dollars, but many have not been used in the years since they've acquired the business. But to tell them to get rid of them seems like throwing away money.

The obvious solution is 'calibrate before use' but that of course requires sending them out, so if it's needed urgently that won't work.

In the event I can convince them to unload them, does anyone know a company that buys/sells used gages?

Any suggestions?

Thumbs up Re: Suggestions for thread rings and plugs - Old and not used for years

Can you get a list of parts? I'll claim first dibs on evaluating for purchase.

We use them. We unfortunately also lose them since they are used on the production floor.
Are there NPT step gauges included?

Laura, when I was with Rockwell and we inherited a ton of gages from one of their old plants, we found a calibration service that would send in a technician. He was there 3 12 hour days, and provided a detailed list of the calibrations, dates, and due dates. I think it cost about $15,000 for all expenses.

Thanks Discordian, Ralph, Al and others....

I think the compromise will be somewhere in the middle, because there were alot of duplicates. So they'll probably thin out the population first. I didn't think about having someone on site. I think they have a summer help college kid taking inventory now.

Laura
Could you post a list when it's completed? My company calibrates and sells gauges, and the odd ones are always in demand.

Re: Suggestions for thread rings and plugs - Old and not used for years

if there are duplicates, you could send out one per "family" and calibrate the rest in-house from that one?

I would assess how important they are for the process and do as many in-house as I could using traceable equipment on-hand.
