I personally do not know the requirements and procedure for becoming a registrar. Contact the RAB for that information. You can get the number of the RAB from the ASQC or AIAG.

The RAB (Registrar Accreditation Board) is an AIAG (Auto Industry Action Group) off-shoot as I understand it, and the AIAG is related to the SAE. I really don't know the exact relationships in so far as each are really separate entities as far as I know. The ASQC (American Society for Quality Control) has a fringe relationship to the RAB I think.

Maybe some of the others can shed some light here on the actual relationships.

I don't know the details for starting a registrar from scratch, but you can become involved with a registrar, and open an office for them easily. I work with URS out of the UK, and have a US office for them. I audited for them, and we had a good relationship (respect for each other, if you will) and they offered me the opportunity. I have a consulting company, so to keep things above board, I have someone running the office that is seperate from the consulting/training arm. if you would like that sort of arrangement, I can make the introduction/contact for you...or you could be an extension of the US office. Most registrars have the same offering, and their own rules as to "who" and how they authorize to do business in their behalf. I was already working with URS, so I had passed their scruitny before it came up. They tend to work with refferals and by thier experience with you. Then they have certain requiements for confidentiality and professionalism as well as independance. If you have a market lined up, it is fairly easy to become profitable. I have a small market, and this is a side line, so it will take me a bit longer. What I like best is the tie to all the latest information and the opportunity for professional enrichment. You would be surprised the kudos you get if you are supported/sponsored by a reputable registrar. Are you in it for the money or the availability of a local registrar to serve your needs. Obviously there is more money to be made with your own company, but the costs and drawbacks are many. In my situation, everything comes from the main office, we merely do the middle man stuff..and schedule work as they send the notices..no tracking, no billing, no files...therefore...no audits from UKAS/RAB etc. (unless our auditors are the soones in the sample...but the office is not audited, it only does sales and contract personnel)..it is atrade off...but one I am happy with.

The site also contains downloadable forms that are needed by auditors to log audit experience and CPD history as well as much more RAB related information.
