I've heard of this in software or computer hardware as (SDLC) System Development Life Cycle. I don't see why one couldn't apply the same principles to any other product.

I think a good tool to use might be The bathtub curve or Weibull Distribution.

Re: Manufacturing Lessons Learned - New product from Design into Manufacturing

Generally, this is a document or book where you record "lessons learned" while you go about your daily efforts. (A lab logbook would be an example). The goal is to record good thoughts you learned, while they are fresh, so they are not forgotten. Also, they should be accessible to approrpiate personnel, and should be easily searchible. So, electronic formats would be better.

The format can be whatever you want. I have seen a single MS Word or MS Excel document, where everyone continues to add info. Like a diary. This can be searched easily.

If you want to be more complex, you can use a database, or Lotus Notes, but that may be more complicated.

The format does not matter, the "Body of Knowledge" is the focus.
