After a conversation with a friend I have declared myself a 6 Sigma Green Belt
She just finished up GB training/project and after reviewing her notes and talking with her at length I have determined that I have done all this many times over in the last 15 years.
Can I make myself a certificate and add it to my resume for the next time I have to get by a gatekeeper?
I've never worked for a company big enough to spend the bucks on this kind of effort so, besides paying my own money for training - money that is marked to go in to my kids' college savings accounts - this is about the only way I can think of doing it.

I just made a deal with one of my staff who has the same degree as me and very similar background... We're going to make certs for each other.

Yeah, you can generate and exchange certs under your company name for each other. I shall do the same.

Humorous!
I really like the idea of an organization creating its own system of muddying the waters over what constitutes a valid "Six Sigma [belt color]" by emulating the process followed by Motorola and GE. Size doesn't make any difference because there are jackleg consulting firms all over the world who confer Six Sigma certificates to anyone willing to pay the fee and sit through a few sessions of "training."
There are some killjoys, of course, who want to spoil all that by publishing a Body of Knowledge in which the Six Sigma Certificate is actually supposed to demonstrate knowledge, skill, and experience (such as the one offered by the American Society for Quality (ASQ)). Even the ASQ certificate is sometimes conferred on folks ill-suited to lead a QMS for any organization.
I've spent the last five years wasting time and energy trying to convince organizations to actually require a competency test before accepting ANY person as an employee or consultant, regardless of who or what issued him/her a Six Sigma certificate. Alas, the guys offering the certificates have been MUCH more successful in getting their story accepted by organizations than I have in debunking myriad schmucks who wouldn't recognize an X bar chart if it bit them on the rump.

How about this one? The Cove could have an online test that we could take, and if we passed it we could receive a certificate from Marc? Wouldn't even cost a lot to set up, and we could all just receive the cert as a PDF file and print it at work

ASQ Six sigma Green belt exam does not require a project.
You don’t need to submit any training records. You need to submit your experience summary.
ASQ Exam eligibility requirement: The Six Sigma Green Belt requires three years of work experience within the Body of Knowledge.
http://www.asq.org/certification/six...-belt/bok.html
If you think you already have the necessary knowledge and experience on SSGB Body of Knowledge you may write the next public administered exam on Dec 2nd 2006. Exam deadline Oct 6th 2006. I think the Exam cost is $155 for ASQ members.
Regards,
Govind.
