ASQ Certification Renamed: CMI to CQI

For those who are wondering where CMI in the certification list and why there is a new certification called CQI, Certified Mechanical Inspector has been renamed to Certified Quality Inspector.

ASQ Certification Offering replies:
“The CMI exam changed its name only. The BOK has remained the same. After much discussion with the Inspection Division over a two year period the Certification Board approved the name change from Certified Mechanical Inspector to Certified Quality Inspector in February 2006.

The name change was due to the decreasing number of examinees over the past four years. It was felt if the name were changed to reflect more what an inspector is doing currently it would hopefully help with the number of examinees applying. The name change was actually presented at the World Conference in Milwaukee. The first administration of the CQI exam will be October 21. We are planning on mailing out new certificates and cards to all current CMI’s with the new CQI name.”

Yes ASQ renamed CQM to CMQ/OE and March 2006 was the first international administration. In that case, The Body of Knowledge was also revised.
In the case of CMI, It is merely a name change.
