Here is a thread that you can look at and review. Under normal circumstances there are threads that have addressed these questions.

It's interesting that BSi has this page on its website that says:

There are several international standards for suppliers of the automotive industry. BSI has all of the standards available for you to purchase including:

• ISO/TS16949 - ISO Technical Specification aligning existing automotive quality system requirements within the automotive industry.
• QS-9000 - Requirements developed by Daimler-Chrysler, Ford and General Motors based on ISO 9000.
• TE Supplement - Tooling and Equipment Supplement of QS-9000.
• VDA 6.1 - Verband der Automobilindustrie e.V - the German automotive quality standard
• ISO 14001:1996 - Environmental Management Systems - Specification with guidance for use.

But if you follow the link provided, only TS16949 is available.

"International standard" means whatever the person saying it wants it to mean. All of the documents above are in use internationally (i.e., their use isn't restricted to a single country), and they're all "standards."

BSI's London office has a "worldwide standards" section which claims to be available to sell VDA 6.1 but German language only.
