I Say... Identification of Waste - Is Packaging Waste?

Hello all,
My first post, i am having major issues convincing a group of people that i am training that packaging is a waste.

The sales guys are saying what about perfume, books, etc they are used to market the product so they can not be NVA.

I have stated that packaging is NVA when you look at the process of the product.

What is the the forums point of view.

Regards

Does "NVA" mean non value-added? If that's the case, packaging might be considered a necessary evil, but not necessarily "waste." Packaging beyond what's needed (to protect the product during shipping and handling, or entice potential buyers at the point of purchase) might be wasteful, but packaging shouldn't be considered waste in and of itself.

Regards,
What would be the result of eliminating packaging? Would you incur costs that would outweigh the costs of packaging? If so, then packaging is adding value.

Re: Identification of Waste - Is Packaging Waste?

Jim,
The actual packaging is brought by the customer,ie it is in the total piece part price, but the actual process of packing is not payed fro, hence NVA.

Any thoughts

If there is a step or operation in your process that wasn't accounted for in your quotation to your customer, then you have a problem with your quotation process, which is a source of waste--the actual operation itself, which you have to do whether or not you get paid for it--isn't the problem.

Re: Identification of Waste - Is Packaging Waste?

We talk about this a-lot. There are two groups ones who say protect the product to the fullest and ones who say less is best. I guess if you can follow thw arrows and read all we need is a box and someone who can read and follow. Environmental issues come into play also.
