Bulk Material PPAP for PCB shop? What would be considered as bulk material?
Hello all,
I've recently been task to complete a PPAP for one of our customers.
We have made several PPAP before for other customers but this new one is requesting for a Bulk Material PPAP from us. Historically we say "Not Applicable" to this requirement.
For a PCB shop, does bulk material apply?
if it does, what would be considered as bulk material?
We are only supplying Printed circuits to customers and i believe this is not considered a Bulk material, but our customer thinks otherwise. our customer is also not able to identify which material we should have PPAP for the bulk material.
Thanks...

Re: Bulk Material PPAP for PCB shop?
I would think that as he is using the PCB as raw material he is calling it Bulk Material. I would disagree as I believe that you are making it according to his drawing.
The bulk material is for basic catalogue type articles such as oil grade XYZ, Plastic POM grade VXZ etc.
Ask him what he actually wants, the PPAP for Bulk material is a different type al;together, look at level 4 in the handbook

Howard provided a good answer; things like PCBs are not normally considered bulk materials. Nonetheless, the customer is free to mandate the format of PPAP submissions, and since the requirements for bulk material PPAPs are generally less stringent, it might be to your advantage to go along with it.

Re: Bulk Material PPAP for PCB shop? What would be considered as bulk material?
Thanks for your the great information guys... Now i'm truly convinced that i'm correct...
how about:
PPAP level 3 and Bulk material Checklist can they be combined?
I know that Bulk material PPAP will require the PSW and the Bulk material Checklist... but can a Bulk material Checklist be required for Other levels of PPAP submission? have any of you experienced this before?
thank you...

The customer can specify whatever he wants. The AIAG PPAP manual represents default requirements; in other words, requirements that must be met in the absence of specific amendments from the customer. If your customer says that all of the documentation must be written out on 4x8 sheets of plywood, that's what you have to do if you accept the contract.

If they're going to require that kind of documentation, I want to be paid with those giant checks that you get when you win contests.
