Here is a simple question ("test") that all of us should ask the company that launches and markets a new (quality, management, improvement, or whatever you want to call it) program:
"Please give me five unique reasons expressed in terms that we have never heard before why your program is better that anybody else's."

Stijloor.
I guess that lets out
  1. new
  2. improved
  3. bigger
  4. better
  5. value
Also
  1. total quality
  2. zero defects
  3. quality circle
  4. reengineering
  5. six sigma
and
  1. quality is Job 1
  2. our people are our most important asset
  3. Lean
  4. green
  5. benchmarking

Re: Familiar with The Oz Principle?

I'm with everyone else....I have just visited http://http://www.ozprinciple.com and I now know LESS about this than I did before.

Having read the tripe that was published on that website, I now feel as though I need to start again, re-evaluate my life and go back to school.

Lesson learned? Hold consultants like that accountable for emptying peoples heads of useful information and filling it with very bad sales speak!

I like your signature quote from Nietzsche. A little more elegant than "only the winners write history books."

I am building a plan designed to align Individual Accountability with Job Performance. Is anyone familiar with or have any input on the Oz Principle?
No one seems to have any direct experience with the Oz Principle, and you can see from the responses that some of our most experienced people don't care for the looks of it. Maybe if you could tell us a little more about what you're hoping to accomplish we can give some helpful advice.

Re: Familiar with The Oz Principle?

I guess in the end I was interested in the opinions from the cove~ especially from Andy who I met on the Cove and have since hired as a consultant for the company I work for.

My boss is sick of the stupid mistakes that employees make. He's been frustrated by this for a while, but just recently came across the catch-phrase
"Individual Accountability". As we are in the process of implementation of ISO 9001:2000 (With Andy's help) I thought I'd do a bit of research on the subject before creating an objective to work towards. Google led me to The Oz Principle.

If nothing else, I love reading the banter between fellow Cove members

In my experience, and I'm not saying this is the case in your situation, when bosses get sick of the stupid mistakes of others and start casting about for a panacea, the real problem lies with the boss. You have Andy working with you, and that's a good start. "Individual Accountability," however, comes about as a result of leadership, and can't be purchased off the shelf like a can of beans.

There is no single objective to work towards, I'm afraid. If processes are designed such that they are reasonably operable by reasonably trained and reasonably competent people, operators may be held accountable for their own work. All else is smoke.

That'll be $50,000, please.
