Read This! ISO9001:2000 - US TC176 team recommended disapproval

I admit I'm a real novice when it comes to the ISO standards approval process, but I have a question. I read yesterday in Quality Progress and also here, that the US TC176 team recommended disapproval of the ISO 9001:2000 draft 2 unless certain requirements are changed. Now I also read in Rick Clement's forum (ISO support group homepage) that draft 2 was approved (perhaps I am using the wrong wording, but that is how I interpreted the wording that was used). What is the scoop? Have other countries also disapproved this version, pending their recommended changes to the draft? I wonder about this because there are quite a few courses/support group meetings that one can go to and talk about the ISO 9001:2000 draft 2. Are these worth going to? (There also is fair amount of disparity in opinion about the effect of 2000 version on already-registered companies.)

Open Discussion of the Year 2000 Version of ISO 9000
--------------------------------------------------------

Attention: CD2 of ISO 9000, ISO 9001, and ISO 9004 for the year 2000 have been approved for consideration as a draft international standard (DIS).

However, a great deal of comments were submitted with the vote. This has resulted in a new proposal to be considered at the September 13th plenary meeting of the ISO/TC176/SC2 group. It has been proposed that the comments be reviewed by ISO/TC 176/SC2/WG 18, and the text of ISO/CD2 9004:2000 be revised by WG 18 to produce the DIS draft.

That means that we now have to wait until mid-September to see if the DIS will be issued with significant adjustments to meet most of the criticisms submitted. Odds are now very high that the same requirements from CD2 will stay intact, but new language and structure may be introduced. Stay tuned

Report from the TC 176 Meeting-San Francisco, California

ISO 9000:2000, ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 9004:2000 were advanced to Draft International Standard (DIS) at the recent meetings of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee (TC) 176. There were extensive discussions, but the working groups responsible for these documents were well prepared to address each issue raised.

Prior to the meetings, a critical issues list had been prepared summarizing the items that were critical to resolving the more serious comments pointed out by the participating member countries and other speakers. These preliminary efforts paid off and paved the way for approval. Essentially all of the US critical comments were resolved during the week.

The Joint Working Group (JWG) on Auditing Document-ISO 19011-was advanced to CD stage. The JWG considered comments received on the working draft of the joint quality and environmental auditing standard. Subcommittee 2 passed a resolution to advance the document to the CD stage for comments. The next step is up to ISO TC 207/SC 2 (the environmental technical committee); they must also approve the circulation of the CD for comments.

ISO 10012 was also moved to CD status. The sub-committee approved the advancement of the draft of ISO 10012-combining parts 1 and 2- to CD for comment.

[This information comes from a press release issued by The Informed Outlook and will be posted within a few days on the USA Standards Group web site. The draft standards mentioned above will be critically examined by the USA Standards Group at the November 14-18 meetings in Washington, DC.]

Dennis, you could do truth a favor and separate the last sentence off into a new paragraph. In fact, none of the US deal making comments were on the list of 6 Critical Issues.

Nonetheless, individual efforts paid off on all of our issues.

Just read the "Rick Clements" ISO website and it had this information:

"Notes: The San Francisco meeting of TC 176 went well with the usual
in-fighting. The CD2 was advanced to Draft International Standard level.
However, an interesting comment was made that the DIS had fewer
requirements than the CD2. This should make it an interesting document
when it becomes available in about a month."

I guess the DIS will look different than the CD2 version. We'll see,eh?
