Jim,

What's more important: package or contents?

Stijloor.
The package, to someone who makes packages.

There is no need for containers if there's nothing to put in them, so you can't separate one from the other in terms of importance.

Great point!

Going back to the "forms"; I would be more concerned with the quality of the data/information contained in the forms than the form itself. But I also understand that structure and control of the form (electronic and/or hard copy) is necessary too.

Re: Controlling Continuously Changing Forms

In this specific application, I see no reason to argue when the actual practice should not be done. Updating from the last process point is a poor practice.

Study the Deming Funnel Experiment to understand the problems with your organization's technique of modifying the target values based on the last run. There is a more important issue with the methodology than the conrtrol of the form..

Good point, it seems to have been missed.

My spidey senses are tingling over this one! Constantly changing setups? Don't let Toyota see this form....

You are right, form control is not likely the real problem here...why do set ups change so much run to run? Is there a lot of start up scrap while the tweaking is done? Has any of it ever escaped to the customer? I'll stop at 3 whys.

Re: Controlling Continuously Changing Forms

Forms must be controlled only when prescriptive in nature.

More specifically, one would need to control a form which provides space to record inspection results while detailing acceptance criteria for the characteristics being assessed or one that specifies which characteristics must be assessed. This need for control exists as a failure to implement changes to the form's content may result in required information not being recorded or in the acceptance of nonconforming product.

Where the characteristic to be assessed or its acceptance criteria are defined within a work instruction or other similar document the form need not be controlled as its format is immaterial.
