Please Help! ISO 9001:2000 Presentation (Overview, Major Applications, Strength/Weakness, etc)

Hi All,
I am a grad student and have a presentation on ISO 9001-2000. My presentation has to consist of the following sections:

Overview of ISO 9001-2000
Major Applications
Strengths and Weaknesses
Considerations in Choosing
Challenges in Implementing
A Success
A Failure

I have gotten several books on the subject and have done quite a bit of reading but everything I have read or seen just does not seem to give me the nitty gritty. I need to know what ISO 9001 has produced. Are there any symbols or standards used worldwide because of ISO... if so, what are they? Also, how do I find major applications? Where is ISO used ... everywhere is not a good answer... lol

Also, how do I find a failure ? No one advertises those....

Can anyone help.. I am very frustrated ...

Welcome to the Cove

What you are asking for is very complicated and extremely involved. Here's my advice...use your skills as a grad student and reseach what we have here. There are currently over 2100 different discussion Threads and over 26,000 post related to ISO 9001. Everything is free and there are no copywrite issues. Just scroll down the main page until you fins ISO 9001:2000 and start looking.

There is also an extremely strong search tool called "SEARCH", use it.

Now answer a question of two or ten...

You're a grad student of what?

Who are you making this presentation too?

Why was this subject matter chosen?

Why was a presenter chosen who has no knowledge of the subject matter?

I teach this stuff and I'm just curious.

Welcome to the Cove, ISOnewb!

Have you done a search through the Post Attachments List at the top of this page (the thin green bar upper left corner of screen)? There are many, many different presentations, templates, documents, etc. that may be helpful to you. There is also the Reading Room forum (look at the bottom of this page and click on the drop-down box for a forum search) which has many useful items.

Aside from these searches, folks here will need to have a little more specific info in your request for help. For example, are you looking at a certain industry, such as medical devices or aerospace? Or just businesses in general? There are ISO standards for these and other industries which were developed specifically for them, and they include the requirement that applicable regulatory requirements be met (such as FDA regs for medical devices and pharma, etc.).

Another good resource would be the ISO web site, www(dot)iso(dot)org. You should be able to find all currently available standards, which may help in choosing a direction in which to focus.

I hope this is helpful. Please feel free to post any additional questions, but remember that this is an international forum and there are many, many industries and areas of expertise represented, therefore, you may get a wide array of answers.

Good luck, and again welcome to the Cove!

Thank you Randy.

As for my grad student program, I am getting a Masters in Science in Tech Management and the presentation is for a Statistics/Metrics course.

We are learning about different types of standards and ISO just happens to be one of them.

There is a lot of information about ISO... the problem is sorting through all of it. Hate to bug you again, but can you just give me a couple of examples of things or standards related to ISO ... symbols? Anything ... I will do a search again, I promise.

GSTough,
No particular industry. I know my question was general but the assignment is also pretty general.

I will check the ISO website ... and also the links you indicated... thanks so much for your help

There are over 15,000 ISO Standards in use today world wide. Do you have a credit card? It's made to an ISO Standard. Do you use 8x11.5 paper? It's made to an ISO Standard. Do you drive a car? The little pictographs for the radio, lights and such are to an ISO Standard. Do you use electrical stuff? The wiring is to an ISO/IEC Standard. I have an ISO Standard on how to make a a pot of Tea, it's ISO 3103:1980

Hello, there! Thanks for dropping by

Roughly, how long of a presentation do you require? If you figure about 1 slide per minute or so, then that is how many slides you want.

Not to bandwagon with everybody else, but you have picked a vastly broad subject; akin to asking a Motorhead to give an overview of Car Racing.

Just an idea:

Metrics within an ISO 9001:2000 system.
a. One slide Overview of the standard
b. Two slides of a brief history
c. Two slides major sections
d. Two slides of various metrics within the QMS
e. One slide of your favorite (or preferred) metric
f. One slide of the pros
g. One slide of the cons
h. Two slide for summary/ conclusions

3-5 minutes for questions.

Now, that is generic, but offers at least one approach. You now have an encyclopedia of knowledge at your fingertips with which to research the presentation.

Good luck.

Hey, don't worry about the generic questions. It's hard being a student, and subjects are harder when you are not specific enough.

I hope you have found what you are looking for. Just as a thought, I might edit the slides to make them your own, or be sure and give authorship credit where credit is due!

Good luck, and look forward to hearing more from you.
