Question Approving Suppliers - Consultants

This is from an earlier post that did not get much response so I thought I would try again.

We are entering the AS9100 registration process and are receiving assistance from a consultant and are going with our current ISO registrar. So thinking of the consultant as a supplier I wonder what your thoughts are on these, (even if you are a consultant):
a) Do we need to show any evidence of certification or professional accreditation of the consultant, if they are providing training services, especially internal auditing training?
b) It appears that one opinion is that the OASIS data base along with a third party accreditation of the registrars is not enough evidence of evaluation, am I understanding this correctly? If so why not?
I can see the point of having the registrar listed on the ASL, no confusion there.

I appreciate the consideration and thanks for your insights.

Bob:

I'm not sure why you didn't get a response. However, IMHO, you don't need to have any evidence (to satisfy AS) - what you do need is to assure yourself that you go what you wanted from them.

The consultant doesn't really affect product etc. and your people are responsible for implementation, so I wouldn't get too tied up over proving the worth of the consultant.

If the consultant actually does audits, then the cons. qualifications would be useful to keep on file. If a CB auditor asks about the trainers quals. the proof is - somewhat - in your implementation.......

Re: Approving Suppliers - Consultants

How do you decide to hire one consultant above another? You have already put some sort of evaluation criteria into place, so why not make it official and put them on the approved supplier list? After all, this person has the power to make or break your system as far as your employees are concerned and they are the ones you should be thinking of first in the implementation of a system

(i don't know why the first attempt at posting this did not give you any results either...)

Re: Approving Suppliers - Consultants

I have moved this post since it is asking specific questions regrading the AS9100 standard on Supplier Selection/Evaluation.

Another Moderator may move this post.

Re: Approving Suppliers - Consultants

I know this is an AS9100 question but you could review for reference, the standard "ISO 10019 Guidelines for the selection of quality management system consultants and use of their services."

I looked at the other thread that you mentioned:

Approving Suppliers under 7.4.1 - AS9100

There were responses, they may not have directly related with Consultants, but did talk about Registrars.

The forum that you reposted your question was in the Training Distant Learning, which really didn't apply to your question. You may want to try going back to the original question/post and bump it up or re-quote your question.

Re: Approving Suppliers - Consultants

Hi Bob
I'm an AS9100 / AS9110 Auditor listed on OASIS. I have rarely seen a certification body / registrar on a company's ASL. As noted in responses above, the CB is not involved in the supply chain therefore your purchasing controls probably don't apply.

As for the consultant, if the company has the consultant completing internal audits or has provided AS audit training to in-house auditors then I normally ask for evidence that the trainer is competent to audit and/or to train and the scope of the training course. I follow the same process as I would for any other competency in an aerospace company. These are more training records than supplier approval records however.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
Thank You to kiwisfly for your informative Post and/or Attachment!
