To me...they are one in the same.

Re: Compliance Audit vs. Internal Audit

We'd need to know more about where these terms come from to know how they might differ in your situation.

However, in general a compliance audit is one that checks to see if what the organization is doing complies with some standard(s). The standards could be external (ISO 14001, regulatory requirements, etc.) or internal (the organizations policies/procedures).

An internal audit could look solely at compliance, or could also look at effectiveness (e.g., whether or not objectives are being met).

Let Me Help You Re: Compliance Audit vs. Internal Audit

In the context of an EMS (and without further information) a compliance audit tends to focus on the degree of implementation of local, state and government regulations. An internal audit, while it may focus somewhat on the regulations, can and does look at many other facets of the EMS.

So the two are NOT (necessarily) the same, all the time!

Re: Compliance Audit vs. Internal Audit

Actually a compliance audit looks at the level of compliance to applicable regulatory and other mandated requirements (4.5.2.1 & 4.5.2.2) and the internal audit (4.5.5) deals with the effective planning, implementation and total system effectiveness and the ability of the system to fulfill the committments made in the policy and achieve its objectives.

Remember, I teach this stuff about 1000+ hours per year.....heading that way now in fact.

it's all self explanatory if you read the Annex in the Back of ISO 14001

Re: Compliance Audit vs. Internal Audit

Went back and read 14001 Annex A (informative).

A.5.5 Internal audit NOTE 1. says "Environmental compliance audits are not covered by this International Standard."?

Anyone able to clear that up for me?

Typically, "compliance" in this context applies to regulatory compliance. In other words, assurance that you are in compliance with the laws (international/national/state/municipal) and regulations your site/organization is subjected to.

Regulatory compliance is a (very important critical) component of an EMS, but as we all know, compliance alone is not sufficient.
